An opportunist scored here.

With a good heart, the wife tried to save a butterfly.

The strong south-easter wind blew this butterfly into our back garden.

So, the wife was busy in the garden, and she saw some gecko's approaching the butterfly. Let me explain with a story.

A decent guy had a great windfall as he won a $1 million payout. Carefully he put the winning ticket inside the inner pocket of his jacket. As he got dressed the next morning at breakfast, he messed some coffee on the sleeve of the jacket. So, he decided to take the jacket to the local dry cleaner (forgetting that the winning ticket is in the inside of the jacket). As he collected his clean jacket, it struck him that the ticket was in the inside pocket, and of course the ticket was totally wiped out. So, what he would have had was lost.
The story in this post is exactly the same.

This was how the butterfly landed in the garden.

The wife was very happy that she had something to save, because she was aware about the geckos.

So, she gingerly lifted the butterfly out of its predicament and took it to the front garden, in order to release it.

This was when an opportunist struck, as the butterfly dropped down inside the plant and the skink grabbed it.

The wife felt exactly like that guy whose lotto ticket was scrapped, as she thought that she saved the butterfly from the geckos.

Not knowing about the skink's presence, and I am sure the skink didn't mind.

The skink ate the whole butterfly, wings and all.

So, one moment she was happy, and the next moment life happened, and she was wailing. And so, the regrets started. You know the "if only's". If only she didn't take the butterfly to the front garden. If only she knew that the skink was there. And many other "if only's". Similar to the guy whose lottery ticket was destroyed, as I'm sure that he was also left with many regrets, such as if only he had remembered his ticket in the jacket. If only he hadn't cleaned the jacket himself and not taken it to the dry cleaner. If only he hadn't messed on his jacket. And so forth.
The if only scenario happens to all of us, as not one of us is perfect and the simplest way to deal with it is to accept and to move on. Eventually the regret will disappear.
Such is life.

I hope you enjoyed the pictures and the story.

Awww, I do know exactly how your wife feels. I try to save creatures as well, sometimes successfully and sometimes not. Nature is cruel sometimes, but where cruelty happens it is usually quite one sided. Forever rooting for the underdog is my lot in life lol. I did enjoy the pictures and story!

I am glad that also try to save the critters Tammy, and yes, one is not always successful, but it is the heart that counts. We also root for the underdogs, and we try our best to keep them safe.
Thank you for your appreciation of the post. !LOL

Ohh no, I feel for your wife and the butterfly but life happens

Nature has to feed its own, and that's the way that I look at it.
