Hidden Beauty: An Abandoned Church, Rural Lithuania & a Surprise Comet

In late November 2024, I set off on a road trip with a couple of friends through Lithuania to visit an abandoned church. There's something undeniably captivating about abandoned buildings—imagining them in their prime, filled with people, fully furnished, and alive with activity. Now, they stand in stark contrast to their past, with cracked walls, peeling wallpaper and paint, eerie sounds, and scattered remnants left behind by time or fellow explorers.

An abandoned church always sparks my curiosity. This particular one is located near Visaginas, a Lithuanian town not too close to the major cities. The journey took us past vast agricultural fields and small villages—one of my favorite parts of traveling through Lithuania. There’s a unique charm in these rural areas, where communities thrive through farming, traditions, and local culture. Even just driving by, you get a small glimpse into their way of life.

The following photographs capture moments from this road trip. While the abandoned church itself didn’t feel as majestic in pictures, its surroundings—open fields, a few smaller abandoned houses, and untouched nature—added to the experience.

The photos were taken in various locations along the way, passing through multiple towns and villages, each adding its own character to the journey.

Scroll to the end of the post to see a beautiful comet that was visible this year, gracing the end of our road trip with its appearance!

This isn’t the abandoned church, but rather a different one built from stones!

And here's the comet!

Looking back, this road trip was a wonderful experience, filled with quiet villages, open fields, and the thrill of discovering forgotten places. The photos take me right back to that chilly autumn day—the crisp air, the golden light and the stillness of the landscape.

I also pretty much everytime when I see a abandoned home, chruch or anything like that wonder who lived there, when, how, why they leave and let it decay, but I guess everyone wanted to live in a big cities nearby.
Amazing photos, the colors im autumn are really something else.

If only walls could talk.. 😁
Thank you so much!
