Hi Friends,
Nestled on the shores of the Perfume River in Hue, Vietnam lies a stunning historic temple known as the Thien Mu Pagoda. As the unofficial symbol of the city, this Buddhist pagoda radiates elegance, serenity, and centuries of rich history. Join me on a journey to uncover the wonders of this magnificent landmark.
A Temple Steeped in History
The origins of Thien Mu Pagoda stretch back to 1601, when the temple was first constructed under Lord Nguyen Hoang's orders. Over the centuries, various kings and Buddhist monks have added to the pagoda's structures, creating a complex filled with ornate buildings, gardens and courtyards.
But beyond its visual splendor, Thien Mu Pagoda played a pivotal role in Vietnam's Buddhist movement. Its fame skyrocketed in 1963 when venerable monk Thich Quang Duc departed from the temple on a fateful car ride to Saigon. His courageous act of self-immolation in protest transformed Thien Mu into a symbol of the Buddhist crisis, sending ripples across the globe.
As I wandered through the hallowed grounds, Thien Mu's rich history sprang to life through carved pillars, engraved bells and century-old bonsai trees. Gazing at the citadel-style tower rising over the river, I tried to imagine the temple during its prime centuries ago. Its enduring presence is a testament to its deep spiritual and cultural significance.
Serenity by the River
Beyond its historical allure, Thien Mu Pagoda exudes a pervasive sense of tranquility. The peaceful surroundings act as a balm for the soul amidst bustling Hue city.
At the heart of the complex sits the serene main sanctuary, filled with gilded Buddha statues and intricate carvings. The smell of incense hung in the air as devotees prayed sincerely. Even as a casual visitor, I couldn't help feeling a wave of spiritual calm in this temple's embrace.
Capturing Magical Moments
Eager to capture the magic of Thien Mu, my friend Nhi and I embarked on an adventure through the pagoda grounds. Despite the oppressive mid-day heat, we were determined to chronicle the temple's allure.
I decided to film a hyperlapse video winding through lush gardens down to the riverside.

Meanwhile, Nhi photographed the ornate tower gleaming in the sunlight. Sweat dripped down our faces, but our excitement kept us going.
Near the exit, a surprise awaited - a giant turtle! I couldn't resist giving its head a friendly rub, making a wish. Legend says the temple's turtle bring good fortune to visitors.
I felt immensely grateful to explore this Vietnamese treasure. Our efforts resulted in stunning photos and videos to share the pagoda's glory with the world. Though exhausted, we departed with our hearts full from a magical day by the river.
An Unforgettable Vietnamese Gem
From its deep spirituality to its tranquil riverine beauty, Thien Mu Pagoda is truly an unforgettable Vietnamese landmark. More than just a temple, it offers a profound encounter with history, culture and the resilience of the Buddhist faith. The care and reverence that went into constructing each detail is humbling to behold.
So for those lucky enough to visit central Vietnam, don't miss out on this iconic pagoda. Wander through landscapes steeped in centuries of devotion. Breathe in the calming essence of incense, flowers and fresh river air. Marvel at enduring symbols of spiritual devotion and national heritage. Thien Mu Pagoda will leave you with a sense of inner peace that will linger long after your departure.
