It was dumping snow this afternoon here in Truckee, California. So I thought it would be a perfect time to get out on the cross-country skis for a little exercise, across the street at Donner Lake in the Donner Memorial State Park. It was beautiful out, I couldn't believe I was the only one out there. The wind wasn't blowing very strong and the snowflakes were big and abundant. Fortunately, I brought the Canon camera along (surprise, surprise...) and I was able to get a few photos of the incredible scenery.
These were all shot with the Canon 5DS R and a 24-105mm lens. This camera system is weather resistant and can handle a little bit of snow or rain, a very important feature up here in the Tahoe area. The snow was falling down, instead of blowing sideways, so the front of the lens stayed dry and spot free. The camera's ISO was 400. I had it set on speed priority with a shutter speed of 1/250 of a second. The lens aperture varied a bit. And these were all shot handheld, with no lens filters.
And the obligatory selfie... No skis or camera in this quick smartphone shot.
If you look at the map below, you can see that I swam for part of my exercise... No! I'm joking... The lake's water level is a lot lower this time of year and the map does not reflect that fact well. The big open snowy area in the photos above is usually under water in the summer time.
It was a great way to get some afternoon exercise! I hope you all had a great day and were able to get a bit of outdoor time today as well.

This photo has a magically ancient feel
Yes it also captured my attention
Right?! I love that spot this time of year, and the snow set the mood perfectly.
Wow
That place must be very cold
The snows could not even make me see you very well
It must be colder than being under the Air Conditioner
The temperature was actually just below freezing, so it didn't feel as cold as it can get sometimes. But yeah, colder than an air conditioner, for sure!
Nice bi-athelete course lol Great pictures. The second photo where you can see the mountain through the snow coming down is awesome. And of course you can't go wrong with snow covered pines 🙂
Ha! Yeah, my Strava maps always make me look like a badass this time of year...
Thank you! Glad you like those snowy photos.
Oh damn y'all got it bad to we recently got hit with something like that here in Toronto Canada !BBH
No... We got it GOOD!!! lol. Most people in town love it when it snows a ton up here, myself included. Lots of ski resorts in the area.
Hopefully you got to enjoy the snow in Toronto and didn't have to drive in it.
Lol I guess it's nice when you enjoy the snow but I'm stuck with 2 little babies so we not doing much of that !BBH

The snow must have really been so much massive
It is finally piling up around here. We had a slow start to winter, it's good to see white on the ground and not dirt.
What a winter wonderland! I've been living closes to mountains, but we don't get that much snow in the recent years. And definitely no such big snowflakes.
Great shots!
When I saw the map I first thought that you went on ice...
We actually usually get a lot more snow here, it's a ski resort town.
Ha! Yes, I guess walking on an iced over lake also makes sense...
Love the snowy pines! Sounds like a nice little ski
Indeed it was! I've been getting out to that 3 mile loop a few times a week. Trying to get that exercise... Hope all is well with you Casey!
Same here, I've recently picked up trail running, though I tend to do more hiking for now. I found that I really enjoy trail running in the snow, it's very soft and forgiving.
Nice! I was doing a ton of running before the snow hit. But I'll stick to the skis this time of year.
It was cool to catch the falling snowflakes.
Indeed it was! It's always fun to shoot the snowstorms.
I love snow, too.
However, the area I'm in doesn't get much snow.
I have fond memories of sledding with my kid when it snowed a lot in the past. 😀
No snow in Los Angeles where I grew up. Sledding as a kid is what got me to fall in love with the snow and mountains. Always a great time outdoors when it does snow!
Cool ..... here my snow start melt now , and lot times I have lot mud what is not fun more :))) I wait summer to come and all start to be green so I not have more mud :))
Mud season is never fun... It will be here soon, but for now, I'll keep enjoying that snow!
Very true :)) ... when it is just whit it is fun :) ... if it also not go -29 :)))
I so much love the quality of this picture
Happy to hear that! Thank you.
Wow it looks like a dream!
It sometimes feels like a dream when I'm out in these conditions. I love it!
I understand you, it must be the silence, the serenity, the white covered nature, the atmosphere...feels like you are in touch with some magic stuff you do not want to let go of even if it is cold as hell lol
As always pictures are captured in beautiful and professional way. The scene at Donor Lake during the snowfall looks amazing. In the last picture, you appear as if you've been touched by frost, resembling an ice cream in the cold weather.😅
Haha! Yes, the snow can build up on me when it's snowing. I always enjoy when I get an ice beard. But it needs to be a bit colder for that to happen...
The second picture looked like a scene in GOT. Great pictures as always
Ha! It can feel a bit like that too. Glad you like those photos, thanks!
The snowing weather and the snow covered trees and lake are fascinating.
Glad you liked seeing that!
Wow, your snowy adventure sounds absolutely magical! Donner Lake must have been breathtaking covered in snow, especially with those big, abundant snowflakes falling. And the photos you captured with your Canon camera a stunning with such a picturesque setting! It's great to hear that your camera can handle the weather conditions .Thanks for sharing your snowy escapade with us! ❄️📷
Always happy to share the beauty of Donner Lake! Glad you liked seeing that.
