Mega Snow Storm!

in Photography Lovers10 months ago

My internet has been out for a few days, but it was just restored! My power was out a few time over the last few days, but never for longer than 30 minutes so it wasn't that bad. Highway 80, that goes through the Town of Truckee, California where I live, as been closed but it should be opening back up today. It was a BIG snowstorm!

Fortunately, I know how to deal with and drive in the snow as I have been living here in Truckee for nearly 22 years. I have studded tires on my 4wd SUV (little metal studs, kind of like spikes that protrude out of the tire's rubber). I have lots of flashlights and books to read. I have camping gear that include a propane stove and heater. And I have lots of warm snow cloths. The storm was not a problem for me but some of the newer folks in town seemed to be struggling. Lots of abandoned cars and accidents around town and lots of complaining. Not me, I love this kind of weather!!!

Here are some photos of how things have been looking. There has been a lot of high winds so there hasn't been a lot of accumulation on trees and buildings as it has been drifting off of those and onto the ground. But it has been impressive enough for The Weather Channel to send out a crew and have broadcasts from Downtown Truckee (as seen below). This first set of photos were shot on 3-2-2024.

It had been starting to feel like spring around here before the storm, I think some of the birds were caught off guard...

These guys below were wise to leave the car at home and just get around on snowshoes.

Nope, not much of a fire danger that day....

As you can see below, the accumulation on the tops of the buildings wasn't as impressive as most big snow storms, but the high winds had stuck to the snow to the sides of buildings.

Yesterday morning, 3-3-2024, I took another drive in Downtown Truckee but this time I shot a quick video. I received a lot of comments on it that the snow wasn't looking as impressive as the news has been reporting. Correct. Again, that wind...

And I got out again last night and tried to take more photos. That wind! The snow still really wasn't as impressive looking as I had hoped.

So, this morning, I decided to get out with the cell phone camera and shoot a new series - "The Piles Of Truckee", lol. These piles of snow are actually impressive looking even though I'll never be able to sell the images as fine art prints. This is what our town does with all of the snow. They try to make driving and walking around somewhat reasonable, but the snow they remove has to go somewhere.

Alright, I hope you enjoyed looking at some photos of this Mega Snow Storm that we just had. The weather is reasonable today, no wind or snow. I hope you all had a great weekend and were able to have some nice weather!

Don't mess around when the snow falls at your place! Why not sit on the terrace of the coffee shop. Even in the shelter the snow has come in

It didn't mess around this storm! Before this, we were having a fairly weak winter.

Glad you are weathering the storm. I saw the snow storm in Truckee mentioned on the national news. I have a generator that I got hooked up after the last time our power was out. Not automatic and not great but I can at least get some heat going. I wish I had a wood burning stove. That would be more fun way to get through the power outages.

Woohoo! We made the national news again!
Generators are great, I had two at my last house. But I now live in a much smaller place and I had to get rid of them...
I hope to move into a space with a wood burning stove again in the future. It can literally be a life saver. And yes, way more fun and enjoyable, even when there isn't a power outage.

I’m glad you were able to restore back your internet connection
Also, kudos to you for taking those lovely pictures
They are very beautiful

Thank you, and thank you!!!

That looks like quite a storm. Cool that you got some good pictures of it or the town in it. Like the snow shoe approach to getting around. :)

It was a big one! Yes, I keep my snowshoes in the car. They are definitely helpful in certain conditions. Hope all is well @sjarvie5!

Hmm.... The snow is something else we don't experience such in the western Africa... 🙏 Your pictures are awesome ❤️❤️

A nice warm African climate sounds great right now...
Thank you!

It's unfortunate that the snowstorm came at a time people were looking forward to spring but it's still a good thing that the snowstorm didn't get out.
The snow doesn't melt? Why is that? I thought it would just melt away like water? Pardon my numerous questions.

The snow has been melting fast over the last couple days, but there is still a ton of it. The weather stays fairly cold this time of year. As spring approaches, it will all melt and we will have green brush, grasses, wildflowers, and lots of wildlife again.

The local ski resorts are all still open so the snow this time of year is very welcome. We are a tourist town and we need people visiting and skiing here. They spend money and it helps keep our town happy.

You've had a hard time with the big snowstorm.
I'm glad the internet is working again. 😀

It was a rough one. I was actually stuck on the freeway, not moving, for 3 hours last night, lol. The ice was causing some issues.
Yes, it's good to be back online!

The pictures are beautiful! Sierra mountains really have tons of snow this year. Hope the politicians don’t ask us to save water and increase our water bills.

Sigh... We will still probably hear "Drought! Drought! Drought!" And yes, the costs will increase again... as will their paychecks.

The storm is really heavy and quite cold over there

It had been a fairly weak winter, so it's great to see!

At this time, the internet is running very slow in the whole world, the way the news is coming that any cable has been cut, that's why the internet is running slow. It's good that your internet is back. All the pictures are very beautiful and people are enjoying this season a lot.

It's a bummer to hear that the internet is running slow in other parts of the world. Glad you like the photos and yes, it's a challenging but fun time of year!

Most welcome dear.

Wow, still so much snow! 😍 The downtown reminds me of old Western movies 😉

Great shots!

Yes! Downtown Truckee is a historic town. We have a lot of "Gold Rush" history. And a lot of folks had to travel through here back in the day, in order to settle in the warmer parts of California.

Thank you!

It really looks quite snowy 🥶

Yup! It was a bit snow storm, for sure.

Sorry about the internet and it's a good thing it's working now. You know these pictures with their foggy ambiance reminds me of Christmas, an aura of tranquility, even in the midst of so much cold.

Looking at the snowy weather condition of this town, it seems that the life system here is paralyzed and everything is covered with snow. Sorry to hear that you didn't have internet from few days.
