Sonoita is quite nice for birdwatching. My grandpa used to plant the cottonwoods on purpose near the San Pedro river and by the ditches the Mormons built near our house. Those thing would grow up quickly then die off quickly.

I think settlers all over plant them because they grow so quickly. Some of the farms around here have some massive, old cottonwoods... and due to my neighbor have a couple huge old ones, there are a couple young cottonwoods growing around my yard.
