Let's see the architecture in Vienna #2 - St. Stephen's Cathedral

### St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna: A magnificent symphony of history and art

If you are planning a visit to Vienna, one of the most beautiful European cities, an essential destination on your list should be St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom). This monumental building located in the heart of the city not only dominates the panorama of Vienna, but also symbolizes spiritual strength, historical permanence and artistic greatness.

A journey through history

The roots of St. Stephen's Cathedral go deep into the Middle Ages. The original church was built in 1137 in the Romanesque style, but over the centuries it has undergone significant changes and additions. The current appearance of the cathedral is mainly the result of Gothic reconstruction during the 14th and 15th centuries.

One of the most striking parts of the cathedral is its 136-meter-high south tower. This tower, known locally as "Steffl", was completed in 1433 and was for a long time the tallest building in Europe. Interestingly, the north tower was never completed according to the original plan, but this did not diminish its architectural beauty.

During World War II, the cathedral suffered severe damage, but thanks to the dedication of the local community, it was quickly rebuilt, once again taking its place as the pride of Vienna.

Architectural and artistic sights

Stephansdom is a true treasure of art and architecture. Its details are breathtaking both inside and out.

Facade and roof

The first thing that attracts attention is the beautiful colorful roof of the cathedral. Composed of over 230,000 glazed tiles, the roof forms an intricate mosaic depicting the coats of arms of Austria and the city of Vienna. Its unique aesthetic makes it one of the most photographed parts of the cathedral.

Interior

The interior of the cathedral is equally impressive. The high altar, a work of baroque art, is the central part of the interior. There are also numerous chapels decorated with sculptures and paintings, which bear witness to a rich artistic tradition.

Stained glass windows cast beautiful light effects on the stone walls, creating an atmosphere of mysticism and peace. Of particular note is the organ from the 1960s, one of the largest in Europe, which contributes to an unforgettable experience during masses and concerts.

The most important sights that you must not miss

  • View from the south tower
If you're ready to climb the 343 spiral stairs, the south tower offers an unforgettable view of Vienna. From a height of over 130 meters, the city looks like a real living mosaic.

  • Catacombs
Under the cathedral there are mysterious catacombs that hide numerous historical stories. Here are the tombs of the bishops, as well as the remains of thousands of people buried during the plague epidemic in the 18th century.

  • Pummerin bell
One of the largest bells in Europe, the Pummerin, is located in the north tower. This bell has a special symbolic significance for the people of Vienna, because it rings only during the most important events and holidays.

Culture and events

Stephansdom is not only a place of worship, but also a center of culture and art. Throughout the year, classical music concerts are organized here, dominated by the works of Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn. In the festive season, the cathedral becomes a place of special magic, with Christmas masses and concerts that gather visitors from all over the world.

I learned historical and culturally significant information while I was in Vienna, and I found some on the internet from various sources :D

Sort:

Thank you very much for comment😄
About catacombs, I think that you can go with guide
