Ocumare de la Costa is a town located at the foot of the coastal mountain range and to get there, you cross the Henri Pittier National Park on a road full of curves through the tropical rainforest.
I have almost always gone there by bus, from the city of Maracay, capital of Aragua state, it is 43 km. It's good to go in the window seat to observe the vegetation and also some animals in the tall trees, on one occasion I saw monkeys.
When I get to Ocumare de la Costa I always stay in El Playón, part of the town that is closer to the beach and where most of the inns and restaurants are located.
Most of those who visit this town don't bathe in the nearby beach but it is always good to take a look, its waters are pleasant and at one end there is a river. There is also the boardwalk, which at night fills with artisans.
The beach that almost everyone who visits this coast of Aragua prefers is the Cata bay, which is about 15 minutes from El Playón. Buses and taxis to get there can be taken near Bolívar Square.
Cata bay is surrounded by many palm trees, which exalts its beauty, one of the times I visited it I observed how a person got on one to lower coconuts, it seems quite difficult to do that, it is an art!
Towards the right side, where the beach ends is the mouth of the river Cata, many people end their visit to this place by taking a river bath to remove the salt from their bodies.
The swell of Cata is sometimes somewhat strong, so many people choose to take a boat and go to a small beach that is seen in front, called Catica (little Cata). I went there and it is very quiet, and from there you have a good view of the bay, a pity that the two towers built there years ago, in my opinion spoil the landscape, take away the beauty of this natural place.
In a few minutes we arrive at Catica, very beautiful and with some stones at one of its ends where you can climb and there is a small altar.
On another trip I made to Ocumare de la Costa, I took a boat in La Boca area, in El Playón, to go to see La Ciénaga, another beautiful bay with crystal clear waters on the coast of Aragua. The trip lasts half an hour depending on the swell and the place is ideal for swimming and kayaking because there are no waves, that is why it is known as “The Pool”. There are also mangroves there and you can see starfish and many fish.
On this beach there are no inns or restaurants, you can camp and on weekends there are people who offer food service. When I went I brought my food and spent money to kayak, it was fabulous!
In Ocumare de la Costa there are more beaches to visit, such as Cuyagua and Turiamo and towns like Cumboto, but that is material for another post.
