Welcome back, today it's not about lightpainting from my studio. Today it's about one of my many lightpainting trips to an old, rocked-out airfield. There are quite a few of them in the east of Germany. Even though I've been to the former airfield in Schönwalde-Glien (near Berlin) at night a few times now, there's always something new to discover. The pictures in today's article were taken on several visits to this site.
Herzlich Willkommen zurück, heute geht es mal nicht um Lightpainting aus meinem Studio. Heute geht es um einen meiner vielen Lightpainting Trips auf einen alten, abgerockten Flugplatz. Davon gibt es im Osten von Deutschland einige. Auch wenn ich jetzt schon ein paar Mal auf dem ehemaligen Flugplatz in Schönwalde-Glien (in der Nähe von Berlin) Nachts unterwegs war, gibt es immer Neues zu entdecken. Die Bilder im heutigen Beitrag sind an mehreren Besuchen auf diesem Gelände entstanden.

As on any military site, there are accommodation and administration buildings with many staircases.
Wie auf jedem Militärgelände, gibt es auch hier Unterkunfts- und Verwaltungsgebäude mit vielen Treppenhäusern.

In one or two of these buildings, I then took a look at the staircases. By the way, I was not alone on the huge grounds on those nights. You should never do that, by the way! With me were @lichtkunstfoto, @candelart, @gunnarheilmann and Hans with Michel. So I was in safe and good company.
In dem ein oder anderen dieser Gebäude habe ich mir dann die Treppenhäuser vorgenommen. Ich war übrigens in diesen Nächten nicht alleine auf dem riesigen Gelände. Sowas sollte man übrigens niemals machen! Mit mir waren @lichtkunstfoto, @candelart, @gunnarheilmann und Hans mit Michel unterwegs. Ich war also in sicherer und bester Gesellschaft unterwegs.

For this picture I had some support from @lichtkunstfoto. Thank you at this point for your help. Lighting the stencil for the light triangle reasonably evenly was a bit tricky. A helper behind the camera is an advantage. In the second step, the camera was then mounted on another tripod, which was previously aligned with the staircase. I illuminated the staircase and the small room behind the columns. I find it important with stencil work that the light from the stencil also shines into the picture. Otherwise it looks as if the triangle in this case has been copied into the picture or stuck onto the picture like some kind of sticker.
I would like to mention again in passing that all my shots are taken in one exposure, without any manipulation in post-processing.
Bei diesem Bild hatte ich etwas Unterstützung von @lichtkunstfoto. Danke an dieser Stelle für deine Hilfe. Die Schablone für das Lichtdreieck einigermaßen gleichmäßig zu beleuchten, war etwas tricky. Da ist ein Helfer hinter der Kamera von Vorteil. Im zweiten Schritt wurde die Kamera dann auf einem anderen Stativ montiert, welches vorher auf das Treppenhaus ausgerichtet wurde. Ich leuchtete das Treppenhaus und den kleinen Raum hinter den Säulen aus. Ich finde es bei Schablonenarbeiten wichtig, dass das Licht der Schablone auch ins Bild scheint. Sonst sieht es so aus, als wäre das Dreieck in diesem Fall ins Bild kopiert worden oder wie eine Art von Aufkleber auf das Bild geklebt wurde.
Das alle meine Bilder in einer Belichtung entstehen, ohne Manipulation in der Nachbearbeitung, möchte ich am Rande nochmal erwähnen.

Next staircase picture
First I lit myself with the D18 and an orange colour filter. Then I grabbed the Convoy S2+ (in blue) and illuminated the stairways from below towards the camera.

I wanted to preserve the structures of the old, peeling paint on the walls, so I gave the light a direction and moved the lamp in the process so that the result would be reasonably even.
The "full professional" and "light hero" would probably have been able to throw a few pool lights into the corner and destroy the structures. Conveniently from behind the camera, shitting light onto the scene is also a common method of completely eliminating the structures on the walls. (Attention sarcasm!)
Nächstes Treppenhausbild
Als erstes habe ich mich mit der D18 und einem orangenen Farbfilter selbst ins Bild geleuchtet. Danach habe ich mir die Convoy S2+ (in blau) geschnappt und noch die Treppenabgänge von unten in Richtung Kamera ausgeleuchtet.
Ich wollte die Strukturen der alten, abblätternden Farbe an den Wänden erhalten, deshalb habe ich dem Licht eine Richtung gegeben und die Lampe dabei bewegt, damit das Ergebnis einigermaßen gleichmäßig wird.
Der "Vollprofi" und "Light-Hero" hätte hier wahrscheinlich gekonnt ein paar Poolleuchten in die Ecke gepfeffert und die Strukturen kaputt geleuchtet. Ganz bequem von hinter der Kamera, Licht auf die Szene scheißen, ist auch eine weit verbreitete Methode, um die Strukturen an den Wänden komplett zu eleminieren. (Achtung Sarkasmus!)

The Tower
The old tower on the site does not look like a tower of today's modern airports.
After the end of the Second World War, a helicopter squadron was stationed here and the building seems to me to have been adequate for this purpose. But that's just a side note.
So many decades after its last use, the whole thing has suffered a lot. Vandalism as always, and the weather has also left its mark.

Der alte Tower auf dem Gelände sieht nicht wie ein Tower der heutigen Zeit, auf modernen Flughäfen aus.
Nach dem Ende des 2. Weltkriegs war hier eine Hubschrauber-Staffel stationiert und dafür scheint mir das Gebäude ausreichend gewesen zu sein zu sein. Aber das nur am Rande.
So viele Jahrzehnte nach der letzten Nutzung, hat das ganze Ding ordentlich gelitten. Vandalismus wie immer und auch das Wetter hat seine Spuren hinterlassen.

I then chose the front of the building for my picture, as here the view was not obscured by trees.
However, time was a bit tight. As you can see from the sky, the picture was taken at blue hour, shortly before sunrise.
The rest of the Lightpainter troop was still busy somewhere on the grounds or had already arrived at Hans' motorhome.
But I still wanted to take this picture. So I pointed the camera at the front of the building, prepared my Emisar D18 with colour filters and off I went with the snap idea.
In the next location picture you can see the entrance to the tower, which was at the back. So I had to walk around the building from the camera so I could get inside.
In the building itself, steel struts were hanging out of the ceiling and the stairs no longer had railings.
Ich habe mir dann die Vorderseite des Gebäudes für mein Bild ausgesucht, da hier nicht die Sicht durch Bäume verdeckt war.
Allerdings war die Zeit etwas knapp. Wie Ihr am Himmel sehen könnt, entstand das Bild zur blauen Stunde, kurz vor dem Sonnenaufgang.
Der Rest der Lightpainter-Truppe war noch irgendwo auf dem Gelände beschäftigt oder hatte sich bereits an dem Wohnmobil von Hans eingefunden.
Ich wollte aber noch dieses Bild umsetzen. Also habe ich die Kamera auf der Vorderseite des Gebäudes ausgerichtet, meine Emisar D18 mit Farbfiltern prepariert und los ging es mit der Schnapsidee.
Am nächsten Locationbild sieht man den Eingang zum Tower, der sich auf der Rückseite befand. Also musste ich von der Kamera um das Gebäude laufen, damit ich in das Innere gelangen konnte.
Im Gebäude selber hingen Stahlverstrebungen aus der Decke und die Treppen hatten kein Geländer mehr.

At the time it was still dark on site, the blue sky in the finished image is only created by the longer exposure. But after two attempts and careful movements in the building, I survived the whole thing unscathed. Anyone who regularly follows my posts here or is on the road with me knows that I also like to run into a wall that I have overlooked or that simply wasn´t there before. 😂
Zu dem Zeitpunkt war es vor Ort noch dunkel, der blaue Himmel im fertigen Bild, entsteht ja erst durch die längere Belichtung. Aber nach zwei Versuchen und vorsichtigen Bewegungen im Gebäude, habe ich das Ganze unbeschadet überstanden. Wer hier regelmäßig meine Beiträge verfolgt oder mit mir unterwegs ist, weiß, dass ich auch gerne mal gegen eine Wand renne, die ich übersehen habe oder die da vorher einfach noch nicht stand.😂

The last survivor
We had a lot of fun making this picture. So @lichtkunstfoto, Hans and Matthias had fun, I was the fool who was allowed to light up the big apartment blocks. Ok, that was my idea too, so I have to make sure that the light gets into the picture. Matthias used an LED tube (orange) to illuminate the flat on the upper floor. Once again, the entrance was on the wrong side. So Matthias stayed upstairs during the three attempts so that someone wouldn't have to run every time the light changed. Hans is the model with the splitting axe, whom I illuminated with a scanner. Then I walked the blocks of flats with the Emisar D18. However, through waist-high overgrowth with thorn bushes, lots of rubbish and an uneven floor. What fun!
@lichtkunstfoto supervised the process and, over a cigarette and beer, occasionally asked about my well-being.
Der letzte Überlebende
Bei der Umsetzung dieses Bildes, hatten wir eine Menge Spaß. Also @lichtkunstfoto, Hans und Matthias hatten Spaß, ich war der Trottel, der die große Wohnblöcke ausleuchten durfte. Ok, war auch meine Bildidee, also muss ich halt auch zusehen, dass das Licht ins bild kommt. Matthias hat mit einer LED-Röhre (orange) die Wohnung im oberen Stockwerk ausgeleuchtet. Auch hier war der Eingang mal wieder auf der falschen Seite. Also ist Matthias während der insgesamt drei Versuche oben geblieben, um bei evtl. Veränderungen am Licht, nicht jedes Mal jemand laufen musste. Hans ist das Model mit der Spaltaxt, dem ich mit einem Scanner ins Bild geleuchtet habe. Anschließend lief ich mit der Emisar D18 die Wohnblöcke ab. Allerdings durch hüfthohen Bewuchs mit Dornenbüschen, jede Menge Müll und einem unebenen Boden. Was für ein Spaß!
@lichtkunstfoto überwachte den Ablauf und fragte bei Zigarette und Bier, gelegentlich nach meinem Wohlbefinden.

No food has been cooked here for a while. But sometimes there are strange lights buzzing under the bonnet.
Hier wird schon länger kein Essen mehr gekocht. Dafür schwirren da manchmal so komische Lichterscheinungen unter der Abzugshaube.

For the realisation, we mounted a blade (light shaper made of plexiglass) on a rotating aid. @lichtkunstfoto turned the turning aid with muscle power (thanks for that), while I turned the camera (camera rotation). Then the lens was capped and mounted on a second tripod in the kitchen, where I then lit the room, which was not so easy for me with tiles. I then gave the extractor bonnet and the floor some more light.
Für die Umsetzung haben wir auf einer Drehhilfe ein Blade (Lichtformer aus Plexiglas) montiert. @lichtkunstfoto hat mit Muskelkraft die Drehhilfe gedreht (Danke dafür), während ich die Kamera gedreht habe (Kamerarotation). Anschließend wurde das Objektiv abgedeckt und auf einem zweiten Stativ in der Küche montiert, wo ich dann den Raum ausgeleuchtet habe, was mit Fliesen nicht so einfach für mich war. Der Abzugshaube und dem Boden habe ich dann noch etwas Licht gegönnt.

Poolleuchten sind leider sehr ungeeignet für die Ausleuchtung. Ich weiß, jetzt biste total enttäuscht, weil du da nen ganzen Koffer von gekauft hast. Hättest mal vorher den Onkel gefragt, der hat auch Antworten und nicht nur Bonbons. 😂
