Hello Hive World, today I wanted to tell you about my visit to the Harz Mountains. Twice this year I had the opportunity to visit this area with a group of photographer friends. The Harz Mountains are located in the Harz National Park and is one of the largest forest national parks in Germany. However, it has only been there since 1990, when the West Harz (FRG) and the East Harz (GDR) were merged. The most famous and highest mountain in the Harz is the Brocken (1141 m). The area around the Brocken was a restricted area from 1961 and was only accessible to the "normal" population again after the reunification of Germany.
Hallo Hive Welt, heute wollte ich euch von meinem Besuch im Harz Gebirge berichten. Zwei mal hatte ich in diesem Jahr die Möglichkeit mit einer Gruppe befreundeter Fotografen, dieser Gegend einen Besuch abzustatten. Der Harz liegt im Nationalpark Harz und ist einer der größten Waldnationalparks in Deutschland. Allderdings erst seit 1990, als man den West-Harz (BRD) und den Ost-Harz (DDR) zusammengeschlossen hat. Der bekannteste und höchste Berg im Harz ist der Brocken (1141 m). Das Gebiet rund um den Brocken war ab 1961 Sperrgebiet und erst nach der Wiedervereinigung Deutschland für die "normale" Bevölkerung wieder zugänglich.

I personally prefer the eastern part of the Harz for interesting light painting adventures. The landscapes are more spectacular and there are many more lost places in this part of the national park.
The cover picture was taken at the Teufelsmauer.
Geologically, the sandstone of the Devil's Wall was formed about 85 million years ago as a deposit in the seas when dinosaurs inhabited the earth. At the end of the Cretaceous period, these layers were steeply uplifted by the uplift of the Harz Mountains, creating a unique landscape along the northern edge of the Harz Mountains.
The Devil's Wall got its name from various legends and fairy tales. The legend that God and the devil fought over power on earth is very common. They wanted to divide up the land if the devil would build a wall between the Harz mountains and the Harz foothills in just one night before the first cockcrow. But shortly before sunrise, a maid was on her way to market with her rooster. When the devil heard the cockcrow, he smashed the wall out of sheer rage. The remains are still visible today.
Ich persönlich bevorzuge den Ostteil des Harzes für interessante Lightpainting Abenteuer. Die Landschaften sind spektakulärer und es gibt wesentlich mehr Lost Places in diesem Teil des Nationalparks.
Das Titelbild entstand an der Teufelsmauer.
Geologisch entstand der Sandstein der Teufelsmauer vor ca. 85 Millionen Jahren als Ablagerung in den Meeren, als Dinosaurier die Erde bevölkerten. Am Ende der Kreidezeit wurden diese Schichten durch Hebung des Harzes steil aufgerichtet, so dass entlang des nördlichen Harzrandes eine einmalige Landschaft entstand.
Den Namen bekam die Teufelsmauer durch verschiedene Sagen und Märchen. Vielfach geläufig ist die Sage, dass Gott und der Teufel um die Macht auf der Erde stritten. Sie wollten sich das Land aufteilen, wenn der Teufel in nur einer Nacht bis zum ersten Hahnenschrei eine Mauer zwischen Harz und Harzvorland errichten würde. Doch kurz vor Sonnenaufgang war eine Magd mit ihrem Hahn auf dem Weg zum Markt. Als der Teufel den Hahnenschrei hörte, zerschlug er die Mauer vor lauter Wut. Die Überreste sind heute noch sichtbar.

In the daylight shots I was able to take during a first location check, the Teufelmauer looks quite harmless. However, when it got dark and the full moon shone, this floating woman appeared to me again. In my previous post I had already dealt with this floating woman, see here: ⬇️
The old railway bridge
She didn't talk to me, but she had something to do with the devil. I guess there is some truth in the legend of the locals.
I made the picture with quite simple means. First I used a stencil (aligned on a separate tripod) to illuminate the "floating devil's wife". Then I covered the lens while the exposure continued. I then mounted the camera on a second tripod, which I had previously aligned with the devil's wall. Now I "only" had to give the devil's wall some light. It all sounds very simple, and actually it is, if it hadn't been for that darn full moon. That night, the full moon shone directly on the side of the wall. A race began between the moon and me with my torch. After the first few failed attempts, I realised that I didn't stand a chance. So I waited a cigarette length until the moon disappeared behind some clouds. In the end I won the race and had this picture on the sensor. Mission accomplished!

Gesprochen hat sie nicht mit mir, aber irgendwas hatte sie mit dem Teufel zu tun. Ist wohl doch etwas Wahrheit an der Sage der Einheimischen.
Das Bild habe ich mit recht einfachen Mitteln gemacht. Zuerst habe ich mit einer Schablone (ausgerichtet auf einem separaten Stativ) die "schwebende Teufelsgattin" beleuchtet. Anschließend habe ich das Objektiv abgedeckt, während die Belichtung weiter lief. Die Kamera habe ich dann auf ein zweites Stativ montiert, welches ich vorher auf die Teufelmauer ausgerichtet habe. Jetzt musste ich "nur" noch der Teufelsmauer etwas Licht verpassen. Klingt alles sehr einfach, ist es eigentlich auch, wäre da nicht der verflixte Vollmond gewesen. In dieser Nacht leuchtete der Vollmond direkt auf die Seite der Mauer. Es begann ein Wettlauf zwischen Mond und mir mit meiner Taschenlampe. Nach den ersten Fehlversuchen merkte ich, dass ich so keine Chance hatte. Also wartete ich eine Zigaretttenlänge bis der Mond hinter ein paar Wolken verschwunden ist. Und siehe da, am Ende hatte ich den Wettlauf gewonnen und dieses Bild auf dem Sensor. Mission geglückt!

On the second night in the Harz Mountains, the plan was to visit an old castle ruin from the 11th century. After a sumptuous dinner, off we went. According to Auntie Google, the ascent to approx. 500 metres in altitude should not be a problem. As it very quickly turned out, Google once again had no idea. The path was anything but easy. At times we had to climb over fallen trees and small rocky outcrops with sackcloth and pack. What "fun" with the equipment and a stomach full to the brim. Fortunately, I only took tools with me that I would need for my picture idea. So I had relatively small luggage. The photo colleagues, however, were of the opinion that they had to carry their entire stock of light painting tools up there. You never know what you'll need. After more than two hours of climbing, we arrived at the top. Disillusionment soon set in, the castle was in the middle of a forest and only the base walls of some of the ruins were left. Nature had already reclaimed large parts of the area, which didn't surprise me, since the last time someone lived there was in 1740. King Friedrich II of Prussia was the last aristocratic owner of this castle.
In der zweiten Nacht im Harz war der Plan eine alte Burgruine aus dem 11. Jahrhundert zu besuchen. Nach einem reichhaltigen Abendessen ging es los. Laut Tante Google sollte der Aufstieg auf ca. 500 Höhenmeter kein Problem sein. Wie sich sehr schnell herausstellte, hatte Google mal wieder keine Ahnung. Der Weg war alles andere als einfach. Teilweise mussten wir mit Sack und Pack über umgestürzte Bäume und kleine Felsvorsprünge klettern. Was für ein "Spaß" mit der Ausrüstung und einem randvollem Magen. Glücklicherweise habe ich nur Tools mitgenommen, die ich für meine Bildidee benötigen würde. Also relativ kleines Marschgepäck. Die Fotokollegen waren allerdings der Meinung ihren kompletten Bestand an Lightpainting-Tools da hochtragen zu müssen. Mein weiß ja nie, was man so braucht. Nach über zwei Stunden aufstieg kamen wir oben an. Schnell machte sich Ernüchterung breit, die Burg lag mitten in einem Wald und von der Ruine waren teilweise nur noch die Grundmauern übrig. Die Natur hatte sich weite Teile des Areals bereits zurückgeholt, was mich auch wenig wunderte, da zuletzt 1740 dort jemand gewohnt hat. König Friedrich II von Preußen war der letzte adelige Besitzer dieser Burg.

The highlight of this place was of course the tree that grew over the remains of the wall. I was impressed and also implemented my image ideas here. I used the rising fog at night together with a Convoy S2+ in light blue and golden yellow, as well as a model that we happened to have in our luggage.😉
Das Highlight an diesem Ort war natürlich der Baum der über die Mauerreste gewachsen ist. Ich war beeindruckt und setzte hier auch mein Bildideen um. Den aufziehenden Nebel in der Nacht nutzte ich zusammen mit einer Convoy S2+ in hellblau und Goldgelb, sowie einem Model, welches wir zufällig im Gepäck hatten.😉

Actually, I wanted to do a lot more at this place, but the ascent was still in my bones and dinner was in my stomach. So I supported one or the other of my colleagues in the realisation of his picture idea. I would like to visit this place again sometime with a small group, but when I think of the arduous climb, I prefer to go to the flatlands of Berlin. 🤣

Eigentlich wollte ich noch viel mehr an diesem Ort machen, allerdings steckte mir der Aufstieg noch in den Knochen und das Abendessen lag quer im Magen. So unterstützte ich dann noch den ein oder anderen Kollegen bei der Umsetzung seiner Bildidee. Ich hätte Lust diesen Ort nochmal irgendwann mit einer kleinen Gruppe zu besuchen, wenn ich dann aber an den beschwerlichen Aufstieg denke, fahre ich lieber ins Flachland nach Berlin.🤣
