Hello everyone, today I am talking about one of my favourite Vegetables: Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Monech commonly known as Okra or lady's fingers in some English speaking countries.
Okra is one of the important vegetable crop grown in tropical and subtropical parts of the world. India is the largest producer of okra in the world though it is believed to have originated from Ethiopia, -Africa.
Okra is an economic vegetable, various parts of it such as leaf, stem, flower, fruit, and root can be used for different purposes.
Like every tropical crops, it is seasonal and requiring specific temperature, humidity, soil preparation, manuring, wedding etc for full growth.
From seedlings, soil preparation, planting, shooting, flowering till it begins to produce the crops. Every parts of the OƘRA plant is useful and beneficial.
A freshly harvested seed of the OƘRA, it is dried and properly stored for the planting season. It is usually dark or grey in color and can withstand harsh storage conditions.
At the flowering stage, it brings up beautiful flowers that are pollinated to produce the OƘRA vegetable.
The fruit of the OƘRA plant emerge as the flowers gradually fade away.
Beautiful OƘRA flower caught by my camera in my garden this morning.
Showing the leaves, flower and fruit.
The fresh fruit is soft and can be easily sliced to make different dishes. It can also be dried or dehydrated and pounded into fine powder.
The over matured fruits become dry on the plant and crack open along the edge preparing to give out its seed for the next planting.
