A little bit about the Memorial
this sign is across from the actual monument which is flanked on each side by flagpoles commemorates the merchant mariners who suffered a higher percentage of casualties than any branch of the military during World War II.
Of the 215000 merchant mariners who served in World War II 8651 -- or — in every 25 -- died. From Massachusetts 468 merchant mariners died including 30 from New Bedford.
The Marine Corps suffered the next greatest percentage of losses. They sent 669108 to fight in World War II and lost 19733 or — in 34.
The monument to the merchant mariners reads "In Memory of the New Bedford Merchant Mariners who gave their lives in World War II -- How Sleep The Brave Who Sink To Rest."
Stone work in a circular design and featuring a compass and a ship's wheel is at the foot of the monument.
Adjacent to the monument is a walkway -- a former pier that has been refurbished with a cement surface lighting and railings extending into the city's harbor -- named Merchant Mariner Memorial Walkway.
The other morning i got out for an early morning walk, it was a nice morning with a temp about 45F, and not raining coming up to sunrise so I made the most of it.
It was very foggy that morning so I didnt get any sunrise shots, but I got there early and with the fog and clouds it was dark enough for me to play around with some light painting

What a great way to start the week, seeing beautiful monochrome shots
Have a beautiful morning
The first photo resembles a frame from an old movie. Great shot!
Nice pics... Yes, sometimes it's hard to meet the targets set at the start of the year... same thing here 😅
Have a good day
As usual, the photography you share is truly beautiful and extraordinary.
Love this

The fort looks eerie in mono….
!pimp
IT sure does, and in fog as I shared today
Beautiful shots! Wars take their toll and without fail some don't return when the boat goes down. Those are horrible losses for those families... I liked that you snuck in some light painting in there to cheer up the monochrome a bit!
Sadly I have seen to much the toll of wars in my time :(
As have I sadly
Cool sign in mono 👍 appropriately muted for a memorial. I didn't know the loses were so high for the merchant marines.
NO that weas something i never knew either till I prepared this post
