Palmers Island
For todays post I am sharing a few shots from a recent walk out to and around Palmers island here in New Bedford
Its at the end of a walk out beside the Hurricane Barrier wall, and has a mix of nice sandy beach, rocky beaches and some trees and plants in the Centre of the island

Located in the Acushnet River at the entrance to New Bedford Harbor, Palmers Island is a 6-acre island and is designated for walking and other passive recreational uses, such as bird watching.
A little on the history of the island
Pre-dating the Pilgrims’ arrival in Plymouth by 18 years, English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold first surveyed the 6-acre island during his exploration of New Bedford Harbor in 1602. The island was later named after William Palmer, an original settler of Old Dartmouth. The island was used as an internment camp for Native Americans during King Phillip’s War (1675-1676) and as a garrison during the Revolutionary War. A hotel and amusement park were built during the 19th century. During the 1938 Hurricane all the structures on the island were washed away with the exception of the lighthouse.
Just behind the bushes on the right on this walk I saw a tent and it looked like someone had camped on the island overnight

The tent I mentioned was just to my left as I took this shot across the island and showing the lighthouse, I walked quietly out to this spot to get the shot not wanting to disturb whoever was in the tent

the Osprey nest and the Lighthouse
I now dont walk around to this point as even though I was trying to be quiet the osprey noticed me and flew away, which I was a bit annoyed at myself for disturbing them so while they are nesting I wont go to this point again

I heard that some people live in it. Even in the USA. This is one way to avoid having to pay rent. If someone is living a simple, minimalist life, then this sounds like a good way to live.
YEs that could be the case, I think it was someone temporarily staying there o the island in this case, maybe out there fishing late at night or early morning and camped there

I saw only issue. That's every tree not have leaf.
Yes when I was there some trees were still bare but it’s looking better now we’ll before the heat wave we’re having
That Palmers Island is really beautiful especially the rocky and mossy part of the shore of that island. I love it. Looking at the blue water calms me.
I do find walking out and around the island very calming
Yep, better not disturb the people in the tent hehehe 🤭
To bad the ospreys flew away… another time you try again.
The water looks so calm and the beach just perfect to walk along. Thanks for sharing have a wonderful Tuesday today 👋🏻☀️What a beautiful scenery @tattoodjay 😁😎
Thanks I do love walking out to and around the island it is so peaceful and calming
The Ospreys are just doing what they need to to stay safe and I respect that
I will not walk around to the spot where I can see the nest there are other nests I can watch without disturbing them 😎
You are welcome 😁 yes, I see… beautiful.
Of course, we need to respect nature. 😎👋🏻
Indeed in so many ways we do
Us humans have done so much damage to nature it’s time to turn it around and start protecting it
The more I look around and talk with people, it does look like many are waking up. And want to help nature again.
Let’s continue this journey!
Yes I am seeing the same let’s hope it keeps growing and real change can come to be
I will pass it on and let’s hope it will 😁🤞🏻🤞🏻🐝🌳🌺
Lovely nature pictures and history of island. I too love the structure and beauty of nature. Years ago when I lived in Minnesota, I had an arborist check out an elm tree tree that was struggling. He came out and first thing he did was lay down under the tree and stare up at the canopy. I was impressed lol It stayed with me. I often look at the shape of trees and how well they are branching and leaving out. It tells you much about their health.
Thanks for your visit I love focusing on the details of nature is so amazing if you pay attention to it
I really do love the soft colors. Nice focus too.
Thanks 😊 👍😎
So is that the original lighthouse still? That is pretty cool. It's not hard to imagine that a hurricane would have knocked everything else down! Really awesome shots! It's sad to see that green bin washed up in the one photo.
Yeah they sure built the lighthouse well to withstand the hurricanes and storms unlike the other buildings
It’s always frustrating seeing things washed up ashore
One more local island I am still to visit.
Great pictures!
Thanks it’s a cool little island and easy to walk to no need for a boat lol
I love your photos. I always find it interesting why ospreys prefer to build their nest on poles rather than build in a tree. Here they built on top of large signs that were placed in the river to mark manatee zones and on land they build on top of power poles. I think the curved tree was blown down by maybe a storm, and they naturally want to grow up instead of keep growing on the ground.
I think your right about the tree probably winds and storms have blown it that way
And yes indeed I do find it so interesting that Ospreys choose to nest in such places
I can imagine it bustling with activity prior to the hurricane. I wonder why they didn't build it back up again.
But it is a park now, and so quiet. I see ducks!
!PIZZA It beautiful @tattoodjay! Thanks for sharing.
I did wonder why they didn’t rebuild but in all honesty I am glad they didn’t and it has returned to natural beauty

What a beautiful island, I appreciate all the information of your history
it's true, trees that have that kind of curvature need to rise to take in the sunlight
Beautiful shots, I appreciate you letting us know
