The Nantucket

The Nantucket a historic Lightship

a have featured shots of this ship The Nantucket in post previously, but after reading up a bit about it and plus the fact that have many photos of it I felt it warranted a post on its own

The Nantucket is a lightship and designated United States lightship (WLV-613)

Now you may wonder what a lightship is, well maybe you don't but I did so let me tall you, it is a vessel that operates basically as a lighthouse tower to assist ships in navigation, so it can be moved to where a lighthouse is needed for the safety of ships.

I read up on it, and is one of two that were at one stage in New bedford, the second one WLV-613is now in Boston Harbor ( another reason I must visit Boston)

She was commissioned in 1952 and was the last lightship to mark the Ambrose Channel eventually replaced by a Texas Tower lightstation on 24 August 1967.

She( you do call a ship a she don't you ) served as a relief ship on the Massachusetts coastline from 1967–79.after that she was assigned in 1979 to Nantucket Shoals the lightship alternated with her sister ship, the Lightship WLV-612, relieving each other approximately every 21 days as the Nantucket lightship.
The Nantucket was the last lightship to mark the Nantucket channel on 20 December 1983. She was decommissioned and retired in 1983.

After that she was berthed at the Wareham Shipyard along Main Street in Wareham, Massachusetts from about 1990 until she was moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts on December 1, 2014. The vessel which was at this time painted with the Nantucket on its side is now privately owned by William B. Golden and Kristen Golden, they also owned the WLV-612 which i mentioned above is now in Boston.
She is not currently open to the public

An interesting side note I found on a website is apparently the Lighship was sold on ebay by Auction, but i could not find out how much it sold for

These shots are taken on different days I have walked down byt he docks, this next one as the sun was rising

And another morning looking straight on the front of it

Now I did try a couple of mono edits of the ship, but didnt really felt they fitted with this post and with the rich red of the ship hull, I decided to try a selective color image to finish off the post

Interestingly, a ship is a SHE in most of the world, but a HE in Russia. Lately, Lloyds Registry of Ships is now using IT for Ship genders.

I found your post thru @dreemport
#dreemer

That’s very interesting but WOW now ships are gender neutral this is weird

Not gender neutral to me, only to Llyod's Registry

Neither to me either
That’s just craziness

How fascinating! It certainly has an interesting history. I love the sunrise shot. It is very tranquil. Do you know what the current owners use the boat for? Do they live on it now? She does stand out alongside the other boats moored to the pier 🙂 I came to your post via @dreemport

I think it used to be open to the public to learn of its history

I hope it opens again I would love to visit it

aaah ok, so maybe it is closed due to covid. Yeah that would be great to go and explore a boat like that. when you were in the UK did you ever visit the Cutty sark in Greenwich, or The Victory in Portsmouth Harbour? I am thinking of taking my kids down to Portsmouth Historic dockyard during the October half term holidays to explore the Victory, the Mary Rose, HMS warrior and M33, all famous ships in their own right, and steeped in history. I think a lighthouse ship would be amazing to visit. What tales they all could tell if it could talk, hey @tattoodjay? 😍

Yeah I suspect that is why it was closed

Yes I visited both of those areas and saw those ships but just from the shore

I think you should go it would be worth the visit

Both of those are awesome, thanks so much ❤️

Have you ever thought about getting a boat of your own?

Well since my wife would never go on it its probably not a good idea and a friend who has a boat descirbes it as a floating bottomless whole to pour money into

😂I guess it might not be so much fun then. But it would really depend on the type of boat and what you would want to do.

Very true but really it’s out of my budget as well

Same here😂 But we can always dreem!

That is really cool. Nantucket always makes me think of the TV show Wings because that is where it was set on the island. Beautiful shots of a beautiful ship!

It is a pretty sea ship and thanks for sharing sir.

Beautiful photos, @tattoodjay!

Very beautiful photos!

I love the lightships! There are few left, but, what a cool history they have, yes? How lucky to have one right there in the harbor and I have seen the one in Boston, down in their harbor. Yes! Another great reason to go to Boston! In the spring, when it is warm and beautiful! They have such amazing beauty there with all the flowers and bulbs.

Oh, you may even see me there in the Commons.

I loved your post, the write-up is always spot on and informational and I always learn a little something. Another great reason to visit! Here is the lightship down here! Twins! She (Yes, they are she's!) is named The Chesapeake and lives in Baltimore Harbor, right outside of the Baltimore Aquarium. (I wrote Boston and had to fix it)

That's an interesting and educating piece on the lightship. Never knew a ship like that exists. The shots are also amazing. You should probably take us on photography lessons on hive :)

I never knew such shops existed either

As for lessons I give tips in posts when they come to mind

I never knew about lightships and that they serve as alternatives for lighthouses. Hehehe.
Now I've learned something amazing yet again. I'm glad I found your post.
Great photography as always, too
