Frozen Beauty

The Devils Punchbowl is a 130 foot tall, ribbon waterfall in Stoney Creek Ontario and is one of my favorite hiking locations. The incredible rock walls and beautiful landscape make it a great location (even in the summer when the waterfall is dry).

In the winter it truly becomes a winter wonderland! Lots of hills, rocks, and trees covered in snow and ice, icicles and ice formations at the waterfall. Depending on how cold the winter has been, you can find a small pile of ice at the bottom of the falls or a large ice structure almost all the way to the top of it. This year it has been pretty cold, so I was hopeful and started at a small tunnel just off of a nearby trail.

The lower Punchbowl falls. I would usually venture down to the base and check out the ice (and behind it). But a snow storm that was supposed to come later in the day, was already starting. So I decided to head straight to the big waterfall.

When the waterfall came into sight, I got excited! There was a hill of ice going up about half way up the falls!

The ice has a beautiful teal color to it, from the rocks the water flows over. So while checking it out I noticed this chunk that really looks man made. No idea if it was or what made it, either way it was pretty cool!

I climbed half was up the ice structure and looked out (you can see my tripod for size comparison).

While shooting from that vantage point, a large chuck of ice and rocks fell from the top. Only 20 feet away from me, so I took it as a que to back away lol.

I got to the bottom and snapped some more shots. Then realized that my footprints from coming in, had already almost vanished under the snow. The blizzard was quickly getting worse, so I took that as my que to end the adventure.

I did a short video of the hike that you can check out here: https://hive.blog/hive-163772/@terrywayne/fiufqayf
