I adore crime fiction. It is a way for me to clear my mind. One of the most unique characters I have read about and loved was Commissario (Inspector) Salvo Montalbano created by the amazing Italian writer Andrea Camilleri.

Camilleri, who died recently, started writing crime fiction late in his life. Until then, he was a man of the theatre, mainly director and screenwriter, dramatizing the Great Writers, like Pirandello and Beckett. Therefore, I believe that his shift to crime writing was serious, a result of great thinking and maturity.

Andrea Camilleri, through his hero, takes the blame for the bad things that surround us. He shows an immense ethics via Commissario Montalbano throughout his whole bibliography, most of which Montalbano is the main hero.

I have read all of his books that have been translated to my language, and allow me to say, it is rare to see a hero that complete. Commissario Montalbano is a man who is ethical, funny like an Italian can be, human and the Man carrying the wrongs of the world on his shoulders.

When I visited Sicily a few years ago, wherever I turned I “saw” a scene out of his books. The unique, beautiful, ancient, poor compared to Italian North, nevertheless magnificent Sicily of Camilleri unfolded in front of me, in every village, every ancient temple, every native person I happened to meet in my journey.

It is not an easy task to create an unforgettable character in literature. Great writings and great characters are discussed for years to come and live forever. Camilleri was a great master of drama, with a great understanding of human psychology and yet a great lover of the classic writers. I wish I knew Italian, better Sicilian, to be able to read his works in native language. Still, I have his translated books and of course, Sicily!

I am not familiar with Andrea Camilleri but reading your post that made me curious about his works. Also the photos are well done, I can't stop wondering how much love to aesthetic the people had in order to create such buildings with great quality that lasts for many centuries. The first picture shows how small we are like ants when comparing to such beauty of nature.

Indeed, we are so small compared to nature. I sometimes think that irrespective of people's works, nature will always heal itself..
Sicily is amazing. If you ever have the opportunity, pay a visit!
