Blue Mussel beds

Blue Mussel beds (or in this case a colony attached to one of the churchill barrier concrete blocks) provide space for lots of other creatures to either live on or between them, most commonly the Barnacle which can be seen studded all along the mussel shells here. The frilly looking ‘inhalant' siphon can be seen on the top and the 'exhalant' siphon on the side. It uses the top siphon to inhale seawater for both breathing and feeding and exhales undigested particles from the exhalant siphon
