There are songs that live forever in the pop culture imagination. People who do not age; We know it for its slowness, and years later it still sounds like an unmistakable anthem or commercial accompaniment. Smash Mouth's "All Star" may be the one that best fits that description in music history.

This great song, which came out in 1999, broke the charts of its time and got a second sound a few years after its release, when it was included in the first Shrek movie and became one of the hallmarks of Shrek. that animated movie. It is a sports industry classic that is played at many events due to its upbeat structure and motivational lyrics.

But in the famous movie The Green Giant everything was different. Originally, DreamWorks wanted to use the song, but because the Smash Mouth song appeared in so many commercials and tapes, they felt they had to use a different composition. So they hired songwriter Matt Mahafney to create a similar song, but "it's not the same."

As the film's script was adapted, Mahaffey's theme changed, and when the song, the only original piece in the animated film, was complete, the young musician traveled to Los Angeles to show it to executives. Unfortunately for him and the way he got an IV score, DreamWorks didn't buy it and finally said, "Why don't we use 'All Star'?"

When Smash Mouth heard that Dreamworks wanted to use the song for Shrek, there was a conflict between Greg Camp and his bandmates because they did not want the song to be included on the soundtrack. "I said this. “This puts us in a sort of 'Disney Zone,' and now we have to sit there and write for kids and families.

“I don’t think we should do that,” Gregg told SongFacts. In the end, Greg's band and managers decided to exclude him from these decisions because they wanted to make financial gains without complications rather than maintain their credibility. Camp also continues to make a lot of money from All-Star royalties while he records other musical projects even after leaving the band. There he discovered "the goose that laid the golden eggs."
