Have you ever wonder which playstyle, between short and long missions, was the most effective? Then wonder no more! I have the solution! The answer is: it depends.
But let's start first with real interesting subject here: me.
I just reached level 55, huzzah!
All right, you might not been passionate about me (your bad, then). The important point in reaching level 55 is that I've been working on this modelization for some time but I waited to have the complete and correct data for Zone 2. That also means: no data for zone 3.
So let's jump in.
Ego-compensated earnings
I already talked about it in percedent posts, but a reminder won't hurt. Moreover I expanded the concept to take into account different playstyle.
I call "ego-compensated earning" the earning of a mission, decreased by the amount of energy or time needed by music lessons to compensate the increase of ego.
It can be expressed in "starbits per energy" in case you are limited by available energy (not enough pizza slices?). Let's say you earn 100 starbits for a mission that cost you 40% energy and increase your ego by 10, while you average gain of skill with a music lesson is 20, then you actually spent 40+20= 60% energy to earn these 100 starbits.
Or it can be expressed in "starbits per minute" in case you are limited by time (a day is only 24 hours indeed). On the same example, let's say you earn 100 starbits for a mission that cost you 60 minutes and increase your ego by 10, while you average gain of skill with a music lesson is 20, then you actually spent 60+30= 90 minutes to earn these 100 starbits.
So looking at my account: 2000 fans - music lessons 10-20: average 15
With average raw earnings and ego-compensated ones, for each subsequent increase as missions are repeated:
So the more efficient way for me would be: 1 Radio Studio Session, then 1 Radio Interview, then 1 Local Mini Tour, then another Radio Studio Session and so on.
Yeah right, that's just a photo and no one cares about my account. Let's play with numbers and see the influence of different factors.
Music lessons
So, we consider a fixed amount of fan and variable skill increase by music lessons. And let's take a look at the earnings per minute (earning per energy basically doesn't change much)
So here we see that as the skill gained increases, the short missions become slightly more profitable. It doesn't change much although regarding the profitability between Zone 1 and Zone 2.
Number of fans
Let's do the contrary: fixed skill gain and variable number of fans, see where we go.
Now the impact is much bigger and short mission are definitely more profitable as the number of fans increase.
As a simulation
Let's simulate the growth of an account, in both skill and fans.
It shows clearly that small accounts should focus more of long missions, and as they grow, they have to switch to short missions that are more profitable. Passed a certain thresold, a going back to Zone 1 is even the best choice!
Real application and comparisions
At 2000 fans, I still play long missions mainly and I'm able to earn 6000-6100 starbits a day. If I switch to short missions, and play perfectly all day long, I can earn 6400-6500 starbits a day. Would it worth it?
Shout out here to my friend @dubble who kindly gave me some info to look into. Here is your profile:
The most profitable way is: Radio Interview, Illegal Busking, Open Mic Night, Radio Studio Session, Midweek Support, Busking with a licence, Midweek headline.
If you play perfectly, 5 of each, it takes you 15 hours (yeah, full time job) and you have time to do 1-2 lesson a day to compensate the 82 ego gained. And that's for on average 13800 starbits a day.
While if you play long missions, you can make around 7000 starbits a day.
(there is a more optimal way, I just took 5 mission of each of the sake of rapidity and simplicity - and yeah, no Zone 3, you have to add these)
Conclusion
I'm trying to mix it up a bit, but there's no way I can be on my phine all day to do short missions. So... I feel I don't have much incentives to grow my account.
It's probably not the intended way either for the progression of the game as a rock star, to rise, to form a band and to keep busking in the street...That bugs me a bit, there's no choice but to change the playstyle as the account grow. If I compare @dubble and me, I would need to invest in 18000 fans to earn 1000 starbits more a day? At around 100 starbits a fan, it's 5 years to break even.

Amazing my friend! Damn, you did put a LOT of effort into this, I'm grateful, it'll definitely help out a lot of people I'm sure! Including myself, I'm going to try cut out the shopping malls and dive into demos if I run dry on missions I can run in a day.
Definitely going to have a re-read over this tomorrow and try take more information in as I'm about to head to bed!
In regards to the fans, I'll say my part was definitely all luck related. I first joined Rising Star/Hive as a way to AFK play a "click" based game that required little to no effort and perhaps bring me in a couple dollars extra month in "free crypto" activities, I claimed a few free cards for completing missions along the way and saw Starbits increase, also got a free pack for hitting 500 completed missions. Seeing the Starbits increase inspired me and I saved up all Starbits from 500 missions to 1000, got another free pack at 1000 + purchased an additional 3 packs, somehow the free pack or the few I purchased contained this legendary which has carried my ass all the way till now.
On the other side of things I can say the millionaire card is quite useful, I invested for it for about $240ish at the time around December 2021 and it's paid itself off quite quick. as you'd need to play for 100 days, 3 months ish to earn yourself 1,000,000 Starbits from the card (to sell and return your investment.) then everything is straight profit towards either selling or buying cards/packs in the hope for some good pulls to increase ur fans etc, on the plus side again the Starbits sit in your wallet so i could always choose to sell the 1,000,000 I purchased way back in december and walk away with an additional $200+ back. Could be another avenue if purchasing the Starbits are an option for you of course
Hope you have a fantastic day my brother, thanks again for the effort you went to!

You were indeed lucky. That's a funny story! "well, I just found a legendary and never needed to buy fans anymore" :D
Well well, I thought about the millionaire, and I don't have the funds (I joined Hive for RisingStar, for the same reason as you ;) at least for now. I should have good income coming from listnerds starting end of the month, I don't know. My HP and RC is priority for sure.
But see how crazy it is? Doing long missions, you would earn 1000 starbits more, when you have 10 times more fans. It's an arrow in the knee for me. So for now, I'm diverting all starbits earnings to splinterlands (just started) and investments, at least this month. On long missions, I wouldn't see any significant income increase before level 125 or something? Well, I am months ahead to plan!
Hahahhaha Rising Star been looking out for me since that card dropped into my lap 😭
You're definitely on the right track, I really got into posting on Hive once I realised there was so so so much more here than I believed so, so many projects, dapps, games and communities all forming around Hive its quite beautiful, made me really enjoy posting and meeting individuals such as yourself! I think if you just make a couple random posts weekly you'd find that HP/RC issue will be sorted quite quickly! Another avenue could be the HBD from post pay-outs being used for whatever you see fit too, love that about Hive 😁
I have been wanting to try out the Demo mission over Shopping mall ones but trying to find 3:20 hours to squeeze it in a little hard hahaha so I've yet to try 😅
I've just tried to get myself back into Splinterlands too, I never invested anything into the game prior (same as Rising Star, minus the spellbook $10) but used to have a hell of a lot of fun playing, saved up some decent cards from chests too then Chaos Legion happened killed all my cards values and changed the whole style of the game so I'm starting from 0 again basically, have no clue how to win battles anymore but I've been trying! If you got any interesting strategies I'd be down to read/learn them too! Pushed myself from 0 Rating to 274 last night so I'm quite happy with my handful of wins among the losses hahahaha
have a great one my friend, take care!

Because this is such an awesome post, here is a BBH Tip for you. . Keep up the fantastic work
interest bit of statistical analysis. I do know that Foxon (with a bizzilion fans) does the the 5 minute missions and reaps huge amounts of Starbits. Nice to see some numbers giving as bit of understanding. As for me, well, I just do what feels right for my play style. One tip, when I head to bed at night, I start the longest running mission I can so I have a nice pile of Starbits from it, and the energy is back to full when I restart in the morning.
Yeah not surprising. As the number of fans grow, you earn more from fans than from the mission itself. 8 hours 20 minutes to refill your energy ;)
Another benefit, it might be a bug, but you gain less ego when the mission is split on 2 days. There must be something happening at midnight

Woa, that is quite a lot of calculation there. I am just keeping it to super simple in playing rising star.
Well, kind of professional deformation... Or I'm just a nerd who likes to analyse and optimize everything, until there's no fun left :D
Reblogging this for all rising star players. Thanks.

What a great post! Very interesting that the shorter missions start to pay off when the fanbase increases. This was really helpful, thanks for sharing!
