I do not like marijuana. I have hated it for a long time-seen it ruin many of my loved ones' lives; however, I do not believe that someone should get a life sentence if that is the only thing in the balance. The other crimes committed, if time had already been served, stand as paid by the time spent in prison. We do need punishments to deter people from breaking the law, but just as I do with my children, punishment should fit the crime. A couple dozen grams of weed in your possession should not warrant time behind bars, in my opinion, unless the purpose is to sell it/give it to minors, or possibly other reasons I haven't considered...but at first glance, I agree this man should be released as having paid his 'debt' to society and rehabilitated to not return to burglary or similar acts.
