At the beginning of every year, a lot of people are already looking forward to the last month of the year because of the festivals in the month.
Christmas is one festive event that means a lot to many people across the globe. It is a period of love that is openly displayed by sharing gifts, visitation, supporting the needy and sharing quality time with our loved ones.
Beyond all that, Christmas is a reminder of the birth of the Messiah, it comes every year to remind the entire world that once upon a time, someone who gave his life to reconcile the entire universe with the Lord was born on this day.
Although there is no certainty about the exact day or month, the last month of the year was taken for the event for reasons I do not know. However, I feel it's something great since the aim is to revive our hearts and give us the consciousness that God loves us to the extent of sending his beloved son to die for our sins.
While growing up the first thing that gives us the insight about Christmas is the jingle bells song. Any day we hear it we already know that the season is upon us again. It's so beautiful the kind of joy those Christmas songs bring. Their melodies seem to be magical, they strike the chords in our hearts differently.
It's funny how you will hardly hear those songs after December and probably January. Immediately the festive period is gone, the songs also vanish into the thin air. This made them very special and evergreen.
Christmas songs hold a lot of significance during the Christmas season. Beyond entertainment, they also serve as a reminder of the historical event that brought Christmas into the picture.
Some of the songs are direct narration of the story of the birth of Jesus Christ and its implications on our lives, for example Mary's Boy Child. That song is too powerful. I was amazed when I discovered that it was released in the year 1978, the song looks like it was made just yesterday.
Christmas without music would be one boring religious celebration and the message that the season is supposed to pass to the world might not have been able to stand as a steady reminder through the period if music was not in the picture.
Music has a special way of transmitting information without boring the listener, in fact, it make the message fun and interesting. There are places music can go that a preacher cant go due to circumstances. Those songs can be played even in the market square, in hotels and everywhere and as it plays, it has the potency to draw the hearts of people to the birth of the messiah and its significance.
In my community, Christmas is almost like our culture. On that day, traditional dance is organized. Those who are knowledgeable on our culture sing Christmas songs in our local dialect and use our local music instruments to back it up.
It's such a spectacular moment, we get entertained, we dance and appreciate God for his gift and another sweet thing is that even the old who didn't have the privilege of going to school get to understand what the season represents as those songs are translated to our native language.
Now music is doing double work, it's informing and entertaining at the same time. Ideally, everyone, even the old, know the sound of Christmas songs but some of them don't know what is said in it. Events like that bridge the gap.
Without Christmas songs, Christmas would be one boring event and the season would look as ordinary as any other day.
