MEET MY MENTOR

in AFRI-TUNES4 days ago
From the definition of what a mentor is, he or she should be an experienced and trusted instructor or adviser. For many, it implies that one must know his mentor. I am yet to meet Cobhams Asoqua as a person, but yet I refer to him as a mentor of mine. Even though some will opine that a mentor should be someone you know in person, that is certainly not the case as far I am concerned. In my own opinion one can be called a mentor in as much as he/she is able to instruct and advise his/her mentee. Now this instruction, advices and even trainings can happen even without the mentor being aware. It is on this note that I refer to Cobhams as mentor.

Cobhams Asoqua

The first Cobhams song I ever heard was ordinary people. As funny as it might sound, the first thing that attracted me to his personality was not how good he was but the fact that he was blind. After listening to ordinary people I went on to make my research on who he really is, it was then that I found out that he is a big fish in the industry. One of the most amazing thing about Cobhams being a musician is the fact the he is highly versatile. This vasatality of his is evidenced in his ability to produce music of different genres. That alone iny opinion makes spectacular.

Ordinary People by Cobhams

My favorite among Cobhams music is the song "Everyday" [featuring late Sound Sultan and Bez]. The most amazing thing about the song "Everyday" is the difficulty in figuring out the instrumental. Apart from the fact that Cobhams told an amazing story in that beautiful song, "Everyday" is highly complex but yet interesting. Determining the genre of that amazing piece is probably the most difficult task one can ever embark on. On certain thing about "Everyday" is the fact that it is an Afro song, but somehow Cobhams alongside two other legends (Sound Sultan and Bez) managed to bring Country Music in. At another point, it even sounded a bit Afro-Jazzy and that is really really crazy. Up till this moment I am yet to figure out the genre of that amazing song, I guess that will be my first question to him once I finally meet him.

Everyday by Cobhams

Cobhams is not all that popular even among Nigerians, but he is certainly one of the most talented in the industry. Cobhams has been featured either as a judge or a trainer in virtually all the famous music competition in Nigeria. He is currently the CEO of Vintage Grey Media. Apart from having produced several award wining album, Cobhams is the reason behind the popular album "ASA" by Asa. There are so many things to be said about Cobhams, but the most interesting one for me is the fact that he actually began as a lawyer, but somehow he turn out to become an amazing musician. There are plenty more to say, but I will stopping here today. If you interested in knowing more about this amazing musician called Cobhams, just click on the link below his picture and read more.
