THE EVOLUTION OF MY MUSICAL TASTE

in AFRI-TUNES4 days ago
I was brought up by an extreme religious parent. My upbringing and that of my siblings was kind of one sided as my mother was the most prominent. Though my father was always their, but our morality was formed by our mother as she was the dominant parent. My extremely religious mother kind of influenced us at a very tender age to consider music that are not christian evil. Though she never said it, but she acted it. On no account should secular music be heard from us. My father will sometimes play the likes of Ras Kimono, Oliva De Coque, Osadebe and few others. It at some point became like there are some circular music that could be considered good while the others remain evil. Thank God there was a father who made us believe that their are circular music that could be considered good, that was highly instrumental in shaping our religious life.

EVERY MUSIC IS GOOD

Generally, I have learnt to consider every music that there is to be good. That does not mean that I love every music, but I prefer to consider goodness relative in this matter. If it be the case, then the fact that there is an individual who fancy a music qualities that music to be good. Every music have got a purpose to serve and as far as that purpose is served, the music cannot really be considered bad. Given my current mindset about music, one can easily infer my stance on gospel and secular music.

MY GENERAL OPINION ON THE MATTER

Though I was raise by an extremely religious mother to be precise but I turned out otherwise. I do not believe that listening to secular music will by any means affect my spirituality. As a matter of fact, I am of the opinion that some set of secular music can be beneficial to my spirituality. This set of music are for me more gospel than the defined gospel music. In my quest to keep my soul and body in oder, I prefer listening to songs with powerful lyrics; be it secular or gospel.

I certainly do not fancy all secular music. Some as a matter of fact can be really nasty and erotic but there is simply time for everything. At the same time, I prefer not to consider them bad. Playing these music when the moment demands is simply okay by me. I have never had an extreme spirituality; I simply believe is God and try as much as possible to be good to my fellow human. As far as I am concerned, it is all about doing the right thing at the right time and at the right place.

CONCLUSION

I simply do not think that religion should cause one to completely stay away from secular music. Even if your spirituality demands that you do not listen to music with certain kind of lyrics, there are music with great lyrics. I choose to categorize some of these music as gospel music. My opinion on this matter is straight to the point, I do not think listening to secular music will in anyway affect one's spirituality. Is simply all about doing the right thing at the right time.
