No profession is all rosy or grand as every profession has its own challenges and overcoming these challenges is what makes you exceptional and an expert in your field.
Just like every profession has its challenges, the music industry is not left out of this as these artistes have their fair share of challenges too.
Today I’ll be focusing on the challenges in the music industry using upcoming artistes as a case study.
Trying to make it as an upcoming artiste in the music, you must be strong enough as the path you are about to tour is not an easy one and is not for the faint hearted.
The first challenge these artistes face starts from the home. The moment these artistes break the news to their families about their interest in pursuing music as a career, half the time they are faced with rejection from their parents who would make it impossible for them not to chase their dreams as to many of them “music shouldn’t be your main focus”.
The world is evolving, and people are getting used to new lifestyles and career choices, but I tell you, the stereotypes against youths pursuing music as a full-time career are higher than you can ever think or imagine.
Telling your mother you want to become a musician at a young age is tantamount to fighting a lost battle which only a few are able to fight from a young age as to some of these parents music could be entertaining but the price to pay is one too many for their children to dive into.
When these young talents are not acknowledged or accepted with open arms at home how do you expect society to welcome or accept them?
Then comes the industry itself. Producers expect “friendship” before they agree to record your song, managers suggest creating controversy to gain attention, and show organizers schedule you for 10 pm but make you perform at 4 am when only the cleaning staff is left and so many more.
Talent alone is not enough, you need connections, money, and the patience of a saint to pull through as the industry isn’t smiling at the weak at all. The braver and tougher you are in the game the longer you get to last.
The music industry has moved from believing pure talent can make you big in the game to how street-smart you are.
These days, if you're not dancing on TikTok, getting into any scandal or whatnot nobody will notice your capabilities. It takes only a lucky few whose talents have taken them to great heights without them really doing so much.
Understanding the business part of the industry can be quite daunting, as no man is your friend. Signing contracts and royalties can be tricky and worse if you are naive or have no legal adviser to guide you.
Producing your music, videos and promoting your brand is not a walk in the park. All these will stretch you financially and if you aren’t careful you just might give up before starting properly.
Despite all of these challenges in the industry we still see resilient artistes who continuously work their asses out just to be who they are today and this is a big motivation to a lot of upcoming artistes.
When next you see an upcoming artiste instead of comparing or complaining about their performance take a moment to think about what these young ones are doing just to stay in the game and cut them some slack😃
