Every African child eagerly looks forward to Christmas. I can never forget my childhood experiences during this season. Back then, my parents would often buy our clothes early, sometimes as early as the beginning of December. This filled us with anticipation and excitement for the big day. Interestingly, there was no music to announce the season—we created the Christmas atmosphere ourselves by proudly sharing the details of our new clothes, shoes, and accessories with friends.
Hello, creative minds! It’s exciting to engage in this week’s Afri-Inleo Initiative (Week 29). I’m Johndoy0, and this week, we’ll delve into an amazing topic: 🎄 Music in Christmas Celebrations 🎄.
One of the most nostalgic elements of Christmas for me—and every child in my neighborhood—was the Christmas jingles. These jingles sparked in joy and excitement in us. Christmas celebrations are often seen as a reflection of God’s unconditional love for humanity. Without considering the consequences, He gave us His Son as a gift without Ramson , much like how parents celebrate their children’s birthdays so also is the Christmas celebration meant to celebrate the birth of Jesus. In the village, we marked this occasion by singing:
"Today our Lord is born,
See the baby lay in the manger,
The baby, the newborn King.
Oh come and worship
The baby, the new born King."
The joy in every child’s face as the rhythm of the song played was unforgettable.
Music is inseparable from Christmas celebrations. Carols resound across countries, states, local government areas, churches, and schools. Among these, Silent Night stands out as a timeless classic passed down through generations. During this song, candles or phone lights are lit, and bright lights are dimmed, creating a serene and colorful atmosphere. Most people don't know why the candles are lit whenever the song is about to be sung, they just feel is a normal thing, but don't tell anyone is say that oo.
Another highlight of the celebration is the nine Christmas Bible lessons accompanying the carols. These readings recount the story of Jesus’ birth, the heart of Christmas. For many of us growing up don't know much about the calendar, but the Christmas songs on repeat across radio stations, TV, malls, and public spaces were the signals that the season had arrived. These songs filled us with restless excitement, dreaming of feasting on rice and meat and going around wishing others "Happy Christmas" in hopes of receiving gifts.
Songs are the soul of the occasion, making it truly remarkable. Even though many of the songs are old, the creativity infused into each year’s celebration breathes fresh life into them.
While the festivities often push people beyond their budgets, it’s essential to remember that Christmas goes beyond eating, drinking, and roaming around. It’s a season of love and sharing—a moment to connect with others meaningfully.
On a lighter note, I haven’t sewn my clothes for the celebration yet ooo! Let me hurry before my tailor starts giving me “stories that touch the heart.”
Thank you for your time on my blog. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!
