Musical goals are basically objectives that someone sets to achieve, perform, or engage with music in a better and more meaningful way. For me, music has always been a big part of my life, and this year, I’ve decided to set a few musical goals to broaden my experience and connect with music on a deeper level.
The first goal I want to achieve this year is to listen to more songs outside of Afrobeat. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Afrobeat—it’s energetic, vibrant, and it has this infectious rhythm that just makes you want to dance. But I realized last year that my playlist was too one-dimensional. When I started exploring other genres, I was amazed at how much variety exists in music and how different songs can evoke emotions in ways I had never felt before. I realised there was just something special about lyrics that seem to reach into your soul, making you reflect on life or inspiring you in ways you didn’t think possible. That’s something I don’t always get with Afrobeat. Even though there are Afrobeat songs with deep, meaningful lyrics, a lot of them are just more about vibes and good times, which is great, but I’m craving something more. This year, I want to explore global music—genres like R&B, country, soul, or even classical music. I want to find songs with lyrics that resonate deeply with me, songs that tell stories, songs that teach lessons.
Another goal that has been on my mind for a long time is to attend a music concert. Watching concerts online or on TV always gives me this feeling of excitement. The energy, the crowd, the live performance—it’s all just magical to me. Sometimes I imagine myself in the middle of that environment, singing along, dancing, and soaking up the atmosphere. It’s an experience I’ve never had, but I know it’s something I would love. If I had the chance to watch Asake or rema, perform live, it would be a dream come true. I’ve been listening to their musicfor years now, and i love the energy and vibe they normally bring when they are performing on stage. So just seeing any of them perform on stage, feeling the energy of the crowd and hearing their songs live would make me feel like I’m on top of the world. I don’t just want to watch a concert on my screen this year but rather I want to be part of the experience, surrounded by people who share the same love for music as I do. There was this particular rema concert that brought so much excitement to me.
Lastly, I want to focus more on listening to uplifting songs. Last year, I listened to a lot of emotional songs, and while they were beautiful, they had a way of affecting my mood negatively. Some of those songs brought back sad memories or made me feel heavy emotions that lingered for hours. Sometimes i found myself feeling down or moody, and I don’t want that energy in my life this year. Don’t get me wrong—there’s nothing bad about emotional songs, but I’ve realized they’re not always the best for my mental health. This year, I want to prioritize songs that inspire me, motivate me, and fill me with positive vibes. Whether it’s a song with meaningful lyrics or a track with an upbeat tempo that lifts my spirits, I want my playlist to reflect the kind of energy I want in my life.
These goals might seem simple, but I know they’ll have a big impact on how I experience music this year. I want to broaden my horizons, create unforgettable memories, and just surround myself with music that uplifts and inspires me. Music is such a powerful tool, and I’m excited to see how these goals will help me grow and connect with it on a deeper level.
