I never go a day without listening to music, I am a music lover, surf the Internet looking for songs, and on days I feel like listening to something different and new from what I already have on my music playlist. Whenever you see me, I am either with my ear pods in my ear listening to music or with an earpiece in my ear, it helps, me relax, puts me in the mood, and helps me unwind from the stress but in Nigeria where I come from, music is a subject on its own.
Like every other subject, period, or time duration given, a particular professional teacher is assigned to teach the students everything they know about music both practical and theory, normal class settings and tools or instruments for practical lessons are bought by the parents to help their students learn what they need to learn in the music class but as a subject.
I don't know if this is how it works in all other countries but where I come from, music is called a subject in primary and secondary schools and is called a course in universities. So, it is taught and we are privileged to have professionals who get to teach us the basics or maybe all there is to know about music until we are ready enough to explore on our own with the knowledge we have learned.
I guess it could also be seen or added as an extracurricular activity which I guess the school also gets to structure and set a day and time for that to happen. If I can remember this, back then extracurricular activities always happened only on Fridays and a few hours before the closing of the day which I guess marks the end of the school week.

Phone was a contrary band during school hours, so even though music was part of the school curriculum, we were not allowed phones and were not allowed to listen to music except when it was our music period and we listened to music just to use it to learn the instrument we were taught, so the music only coming from the music teacher.
So, this is the thing, music was part of our curriculum and compulsory for all in our lower education until we got to our higher education even though it was part of the school curriculum, students were allowed to choose between it and another subject, it became an elective subject for those who aren't interested in learning music.
We weren't allowed to go to school with our phones how much more listen to music except it was time for music learning and that was how it has been in a school setting. Music was part of the curriculum and j am not sure that outside it as a subject, it was used to understand a particular lesson that is not music.
One truth I can say is that music helped so many, it helped many hide in their world and helped some find their passion and they decided to pursue it as a career that they became professionals. Music is what keeps many sane in a world filled with chaos, so many are soaked in it and see it as their safe place.

Ohh you're lucky that you were taught music in school, I wish I was taught too, maybe I would have understood music more. Anyways I still love music like anything, music is life.
