From the Studio to the Bank: How to make money as a Musician

in AFRI-TUNES4 months ago

As I was about to write this, I remembered an interview session of ID CABASA I saw somewhere on the streets of TikTok.

In the session he said something in the line of "as an artiste of the 21st century it has gone way beyond being able to sing... There are truck loads of other people who can sing better than you, what can you do differently? What's your USP(Unique Selling Point)?"

Let's talk a little about Music, you would agree with me that Music is a gift that we get to experience and share in our lifetime. It has seen so many evolutions but it hasn't lost the power it has. I can't really imagine a world without music, phew what Horror.

Over the years we have seen music move from just a form of entertainment or something you do out of leisure to a full blown business that you can make a living from. We have seen record labels rise and fall, we have seen well known artiste retrogress to become up and coming, we have seen people make so much from it as a craft.

Before now, if you weren't signed to a major record label you may never be able to make money but with the advent of technology everything has been made easier. You get to share your music with the world without necessarily needing to do anything over the top.

Here are five (5) different ways musicians make and can potentially make money today:

  1. Music Sales:

Remember I mentioned earlier how technology has made it easier?
Before now the sales of CDs and vinyl was a way to make money but fast forward to present times digital downloads and streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music have made it even easier to not just distribute your music but make money while at it.

  1. Live Performances:

There's nothing like being in the rave of the moment, the fun that comes with being in Concerts, festivals, and private events is unparalleled, on the flip side it is a significant revenue stream for musicians.

The Ticket sales, merchandise, food and beverage sales at events contribute to their earnings also.

  1. Licensing and Sync Fees:

I am sure you enjoy hearing your favorite song as a sound track in a movie, on a TV show, commercial, or video game. Musicians receive licensing fees for this.

It is known as "sync licensing."

  1. Merchandise:

Musicians often sell t-shirts, hats, posters, and other items related to their brand.

This can be a substantial source of income, especially during tours or at concerts.

  1. Brand Partnerships and Endorsements:

This is when a musician partners with brands to promote their products or services. A typical case of "use what you have to get what you want" on both sides

The musicians need the money and the company needs publicity.

This can involve endorsements, social media campaigns, or creating exclusive merchandise.

All these are some of the major ways musicians make money and can potentially make minye in the present day. However, bear in mind that it's beyond luck, you have to be good at your craft so much so that no one can ignore you.
