Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to talk about something that happened unexpectedly at work!

Switching Around
My team is getting switched around.. and we didn't have much notice or choice.
I do want to say that I am grateful to have so many of the things that I've got which are considerable benefits for the work I do. As with any type of change it is challenging to deal with but this was a big shock.
It started the way these things normally do.. a next-day meeting that comes from the leadership team. This isn't something that happens frequently but it's happened a few times before and it has been related to some challenges that were going on. Not with my team but just in general, and a way for the leaders to have good and open communication which is certainly appreciated. In my tenure at the place I work, it's happened a few times, so it was anyone's guess what was going on this time.
All of the cases it happened though it was good that there was great communication about what was going on. I think that one of the things I feel the most lucky about is that I've worked for really great teams and companies in my career, and this is certainly one of them.
The funny thing was is that the meeting ended up starting late, and I was just about to give up and move onto do other things that I needed to get done. Then eventually the dude showed up and things got going. We got the news that our team was being shifted elsewhere and it was certainly a lot to deal with mentally, and the way these things go is that it's always done at the end of the week. I guess that's a good thing because it certainly would have impacted my ability to deliver my normal stuff in an expected way. Not necessarily that it would have collapsed but I wouldn't think as clearly as I do so that would have been tough.
There were a lot of things going on in my head as well as my colleagues that were affected. Some of them are staying behind and some are coming with. I think the ones that are staying are feeling a little more nervous than those that are getting shifted which I don't blame them, "why wasn't I good enough to go with them?" type of thing.
In the ever-changing world of technology and business these things are pretty regular in terms of adjustments.
Am I nervous? Well sure, it's a change that I didn't expect to happen. At the same time though, this is also potentially a really good opportunity and gives me the "spark" that I have needed every few years. About every 4 or 5 years in my career I've made a career jump or change. Stepping up job levels or changing jobs entirely but staying within scope of my abilities. I'm getting to around that mark when this is happening so this might give me that refresh that I need in order to stay interested in the stuff I am doing.
I certainly love the work that I do, but I also am absolutely not disillusioned to think that the companies could give a rats ass about me, so I do what's best for me and my situation at all times. I think this is a mindset that more people need to adopt because it's really important not to think that a medium to large sized company gives a shit about its employees in any real terms.
The people we work with directly like our colleagues, managers and directors for sure can have compassion and try to help us get the best that we can, but the company as a whole couldn't give a shit less besides bringing in money. I am not saying I dislike the companies I work for, but that I don't trust them more than they should be which has helped me a fair bit in life. I will work really hard for them and do the best that I can because it's important for me, but at the end of the day I do not sacrifice my life because things like this will happen and then you will regret the sacrifice because at the end of the day you were just a number.
I am taking one step at a time with this whole thing that's for sure!

Yeah I share a similar mindset as you when it comes to the company/employee dynamics. Ultimately, the hard truth is everyone is replaceable so we shouldn't neglect more important aspects of life (such as family) just for work.

It's never fun when you feel like things are out of your control. I've been in that position before and it is no fun.
