The Whirlwind Weeks

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to talk about how intense it's been at work, but how fast time flew by!

The Whirlwind Weeks

There are certain periods in life where everything just feels like a damn whirlwind!

I feel like I've been posting a lot about work lately.. haha. Well I think it's for sure because it's been an intense past few months!

After the restructuring of my team, there were certainly a lot of questions and things going on. As the days went on, and more was uncovered it was understood that we are in a pretty intense scenario. We had a lot of work, which is great considering we are a smaller, more independent company, and less people to do said work. That was for sure the challenge.

One of the challenges we didn't quite grasp until it manifested all at once.. was how many things were in flight with the different people. Those things that were in flight were also going to be finishing up.. and we didn't really know! That was wild, because all of a sudden there are dozens of groups all yelling that they've been trying to get in touch with X, Y or Z person and they can't. They can't because those folks no longer work with us.. but the work needed to continue of course!

With the restructuring, one of the things I got was a change in responsibilities. I'm looking forward to the change for sure, because it aligns a lot better with my personal interests and takes advantage of my skills and knowledge personally and professionally. The big challenge right now is how quickly those things need to come up to speed. A lot faster than I thought!

I think the good thing, not to toot my own horn, is that I can work well under pressure. As long as I've got confidence in my team and that I won't get fired for being a little late on something, I can turn things around and learn quite a bit on the fly. It's a weird thing, but I do pretty well under pressure. This helped quite a bit in the early parts of my career, where I was put into difficult situations and often put there by myself, and had to get the things taken care of acceptably as well as safely. It proved difficult, but it was a heck of a lot of great mental experience! Those types of things still help me to this day.

With the additional responsibilities I've got, it's been pretty wild how FAST the work days are going! I was never a slacker; I was always looking for something to do, someone to help, and things like that. I wouldn't just fuck off and watch videos all day, I would make sure to do as much as I could and jump in wherever possible to help. I honestly think that is one of the reasons I still have a job.. when you are doing a restructure, you are looking at the people you are working with and trying to figure out who fits the best. The more versatile you are, the better you fit into it and they will keep you.

It's been 2 weeks since the restructuring happened, and it honestly felt like at the end of the second week, that I just sat down at my computer the second day! It was an absolute whirlwind. That is both good, as well as bad! It's good that things are moving along, we are learning and doing well. We can also refine things as much as we can for process improvement and other things. On the same token though.. it feels like the time I have to spend with my son flies by even faster right now hahaha that's the one part I don't like! Damn!

Bring versatile is a great advantage to have at the workplace. I'm more of a lone wolf, and prefer doing my own thing. But there are seasons when I need to collaborate and this is usually the moment when time flies really fast, I'm so immersed in the work at hand, trying to understand the different opinions and approach that each person has, ways to go about it, the time it will take etc. Sometimes, it can also be sort of draining as an after effect when the collaborative season is over, like a void that needs replenishing.

Yeah I know what you mean. It's important to be able to have time to ourselves to get things done. I appreciate those times, but in my line of work now, it doesn't happen much at all because of the role I've been doing in the past few years, which expanded a bit this year. It's all good because they are different stages in life and we get to grow in different ways!

I think finding a personal balance between working alone, and having to work with others, is important. We can certainly find ways to prepare for the oncoming intensity, then detox from it once it's over.
