Hello everyone in the Worklife community. I hope you’re all doing well and enjoying the weather wherever you are.
In this article, I’ll talk about my first job. Do you remember the first job you did? How did you feel when you received your first salary? Our first jobs are always very special to us. It is the first time we’re doing it. While some people have beautiful experiences, others have awful experiences.
Many of the rich and famous people you see today, once did a degrading job, and some started off with something cool and nice.
My first job ever
The first job I ever did was a teaching job. Shortly after I graduated from high school, I got a teaching job in an elementary school close to where I lived. After I graduated from high school, I didn’t want to stay at home doing nothing. While my siblings suggested I learn a skill, I decided to take a teaching Job.
There was an elementary school close to where I lived, so I decided to apply there. I went for the interview, submitted my application letter and did the necessary things. After a few days, the school authorities called me and told me I should resume the next day.
The school was still developing and they needed teachers badly. The school principal (who was also the owner of the school) told me I was going to be teaching English language and CRS (Cristian Religious Studies). I was okay with that because I could teach those subjects well. She told me my salary would be 15 thousand Nairas. I was okay with that.
I didn’t have any corporate wears, I told my siblings about it and we rushed off to the market to buy the things I needed. I was really happy that I ironed my clothes for hours. I spent about 20 minutes polishing my shoes. Yes, it was my first day and I wanted to look smart.
The distance from my house to the school was trekable. I woke up very happy, brushed, had my bath and started going to school. “How hard can teaching elementary students be?” I thought to myself as I walked to school.
When I got there, I became very nervous and my hands started shaking. What happened to my confidence? Well, I managed to settle down in the staff room. When it was exactly 8am, I took a deep breath and went to the class to teach the students.
I taught three classes until 12pm. I was really exhausted when I got back to the staff room. When I got to the staff room, I decided to take a nap, but a few minutes later the school principal came knocking on my desk. She said “Agric teacher is not around, please take over for today”. I was really surprised because that wasn’t what we talked about. Well, I managed to teach them. I had no problem teaching agriculture, so I did a very good job.
The next day, she did the same thing, this time she told me to teach civic education. Before I knew it, I was teaching 4 subjects. 4 subjects! Well, even though I enjoyed teaching the students, it wasn’t an easy task.
I thought the students till the end of the month. And when it was time for me to receive my salary, the school principal called me to her office and told me I should be patient because some of the students hadn’t paid the school fees.
She was that bossy type. A very arrogant woman. She talks to anyone anyhow she likes regardless of the age difference. Even if you’re older than someone, that doesn’t mean you should disrespect the person. She shouted at her staff and treated us badly. I know most of them would’ve quoted if they had alternative jobs.
At the end of the second month, she did the same thing. I wanted to quit instantly, but I thought of the money I’ve wasted and the efforts too, so I decided to stay. But when she did the same thing the third time, I wrote my resignation letter and submitted it on her desk.
Even though my first job was a mess, I learned a lot of things. I also enjoyed teaching the students; it was a very nice experience.
That is unfortunate and problematic! How's the school going is it still in business?
Superiors especially the owner should be doing better as you guys are the main defense line of the school. What if you did not perform well too? I also think this is a Christian school since you thought a class relating to Christianity, not a Christian way to do such!
Mine was a business process center, 12 years ago. It was hard as we answer phone calls from people who have disconnected phone service but after a year somehow the work has been easy.
Holy heaven! Where are you based? In the wild, wild west? I'm quite shocked here as in any civilized country you need university degree in order to teach. Second, there's no such thing as not paid salary. It is your right you have worked for it, so no one has the right to withhold your salary. Things need to change over there as that's not right.
Ah. It is a common thing for private school owners not to pay salaries. The worse thing you can do is just to leave.
It is really messed up over here.
Shit you experienced a bad situation. Yes after doing hard work for a month if you not get payment on time its a cruel moment.
Thanks for sharing with us.
Yes. It was my first job ever, I expected it to be nice and worth remembering, but it was totally the opposite.
That's shocking a school should treat teachers like that. It sounds like she's there to make a profit and not educate the next generation.
Yes. Her goal was just to make profit. She didn’t care about any other thing.
Not nice. After all the stress and it didn’t pay off, painful o
Plus your boss being mean didn’t even allow your experience be a good one and she technically took advantage of you, from teaching up to 4 subjects to your salary being withhold.
I hope you never get to experience same situation moving on!
Here in my country, it is a common thing. Private school owners are the worst.
Thanks so much for stopping by and for your amazing comment.
I've a teacher education, and I hated being a teacher;)
Ah. We’re on the same boat X:d
