Tamarind is a citrus fruit. It is called 'Tamarind' in English. Tetai in Barisal's regional language and Tetai in Noakhali. Adivasis also call by different names. Hao Mong in the Marmad language and Tatu by the Rakhine.
Its original habitat is the savanna region of Africa. However, it is believed to have spread to Bangladesh through seeds from Sudan. Tamarind trees are more or less seen in all districts of Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute developed a sweet tamarind variety called Bari Tentul-1 suitable for cultivation in hilly areas in 2009.
Some people in the countryside think that eating tamarind turns blood into water; Along with that, intelligence also decreases. That is why children are forbidden to eat tamarind. These are mere superstitions. In fact, just the opposite.
Tamarind purifies the blood. Increases the brain's ability to think. Raw tamarind is sour to eat, ripe fruit is a different taste of sour-sweet. Tamarind adds flavor to food. That is why meat roast is also used in khichuri. Tamarind sour, bharta, dal are loved by many. Besides, pickles, sauces, jams, chutneys and more can be prepared. There are many nutrients. Ripe bitter gourd is very beneficial for heart disease. Controls high blood pressure. Eating garlic mixed with tamarind reduces blood cholesterol. Consuming tamarind regularly restores sensation in a paralyzed patient.
Tartaric acid improves digestion. So, to remove flatulence and cough, chew old tamarind; It should be mixed with water, salt, jaggery or sugar in quantity. It works well in treating heart palpitations, dizziness, burning hands and feet, constipation, dysentery and loss of appetite.
Tamarind strengthens the reproductive system by removing excess fat. Tamarind syrup is very effective in curing dhutra, kachu and alcohol toxicity. There is no risk of heart block by taking 25-30 grams of tamarind after walking for an hour regularly. Relieves nausea in mothers during pregnancy. Applying warm raw tamarind on the affected area cures the pain.
In case of mouth sores, you can get relief by mixing tamarind with water. Healing also works. People of some areas twist tamarind leaves, mix pepper and salt and make bara and eat it with Pantavat. It is very beneficial for the body. Young leaves are rich in amino acids. Leaf juice helps to cure cold, cough, urinary pain, piles, worms and eye inflammation.
Tamarind seeds contain an enzyme that lowers blood sugar levels. It controls diabetes. Apart from this, regular consumption of its powder is good for stomach ulcers. Tamarind sherbet tastes different. A cure for many diseases. To make sharbat, soak it in water for a few hours and mix it with molasses and iodized salt and drink it yourself with lemon juice as per taste and serve it to others.
Tamarind, being a deciduous tree, naturally takes in more oxygen at night, while giving off carbon dioxide. At this time, there is a vacuum of oxygen around the bottom of the tree. And at that moment, if a person stays under a tree or sleeps, then there is a fear of fainting or neck bending due to lack of oxygen.
Tamarind fruits, seeds, leaves, flowers, tree bark are each valuable. Realizing its virtues, the Prime Minister called for planting tamarind trees along with other fruits. So let's plant tamarind tree in every homestead.
