I practiced Karate for a time in my youth, many years ago. I was the only female in the class, and the instructor would have me run across the stomachs of the guys as they lay supine on the floor. I was never fitter though. Every class started with 300 sit ups!

Run across the the stomachs of the guys? Did the instructor have a valid reason for this?

Also, 300 sit ups sounds extreme.

300 sit-ups extreme? Not at all! Karate is bloody tough training. Besides, we were kids in our 20s. I'm 62 now and can still do 100 sit-ups with ease.
The idea of me skipping nimbly across the guys' stomachs was to practice bracing for a blow to the midsection. I am/was 7 stone so I'm no big-bottomed Bertha. I'm sure the guys enjoyed it as much as I did:)
