I wasn't aware that passports were mostly standardized after WW1. I checked, after or during WW2 was the time when modern national ID cards were introduced too.
You know that once a freedom is lost it's very difficult to get it back. I'm surprised they let us out of our homes after the COVID lockdowns, lol. One interesting case is of a freedom "received" and resistance to go back to the old ways: work from home during lockdowns. But I guess that will be "solved" by making the human obsolete for these types of jobs.
I have a... solution: let's get rich and settle Mars. :) Before they make stupid laws over there too.

Now that they got the taste for it, and probably loving the power that comes with it, they will probably try to find other pretexts in the future.
I don't think they could have kept going this time because that would have crushed the world economy. But once more jobs get automated...
