We are heart-broken. There is no other way to describe what 70% of the Venezuelan population inside and 99% outside the country feels now. Like most people have described it, it feels like a close family member has died. It would be more accurate to describe it as being “slaughtered.” I traveled from Caracas to Cumaná just to vote. I did it for my friends and family. For those whose lives were shortened by the curse of the red revolution. The results in my polling station were 70% in favor of the opposition candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez. That result was replicated in almost every other center (tons of videos to prove it on social media). A six-hour-delay and a farfetched-hacking-story later, the most hated man in the country gets more votes than in 2013 when he had not yet shown how cruel, inept and cynical he could be.
If not overturned, the Venezuelan 2024 fraud will go down in history as the most outrageous election theft. The level of rejection that any representative of the chavismo/madurismo had grown exponentially since 2013. That election was also stolen, but since they had more support back then and the margin was minimum, it did not look (on the paper) as outrageous as this one. The 2018 elections were also fraudulent but in a different way. There was not real opposition (all candidates had some kind of pact with the government) and most people who opposed the government did not vote.
This one is different. For the first time in 12 years, there was consensus among oppositionists and people expressed and documented their support in massive concentrations. For the first time in 12 years there were also enough representatives from the opposition in every voting station or mesa and they witnessed and documented at the end of the day the unbridgeable gap between the incumbent candidate and Edmundo Gonzalez.
The hopes of the more than 7 million Venezuelans scattered across the world and their relatives here have been so far shattered. We still hope this gross abuse of power is revered somehow and we start a process of rebuilding the country.
It’s going to be more difficult now, of course. The level of animosity has risen. Supporting the so-called revolution had always been a shameful decision after it was evident that theory and practice were not divorced in this criminal project. Supporting that revolution now is a morally suicidal act bordering complicity of war crimes. The world knows (at least those willing to see and human enough to care) what the chavismo has done to Venezuela and the dangers they represent for the region and global stability (their alliances with terrorist groups and other tyrannies is not a mere ideological sympathy).
It will be very difficult to forgive and forget the role of the military in this criminal plot. Those countries affected by massive migration from Venezuela must know that if nothing is done things are only going to get worse for the whole region. Of course, at the end of the day, it is the migrant, the displaced, the one who pays the highest price. We know how easy it is for the world to just ignore injustice and keep frolicking around the most entertaining trivialities technology and consumerism can offer. However, the world has grown smaller and what happens to a group can easily affect what happens to other (even if geographically distant) groups.
Some tragedies can be averted, and the Venezuelan is one of those. These demented criminals must be stopped and the people of Venezuela used already the only weapon democracy offers, the vote. Justice must be done. Reason and democracy must prevail. And if someone asks you how to tell the difference between the good ones and the bad ones, show them this picture.
This is the proud face of evil. Those who follow and support him and his clan are complicit of their crimes.
It is sad to learn this morning Venezuela is rioting in cities against this decision, people protesting being shot.
Political leaders need to learn to bow out gracefully when it is the will of the people. Stay safe!
That's right, @joanstewart
Normal people would; but these are psychopath we're taking about. They'd rather burn the whole country and everyone in it before accepting their defeat and understanding people's disgust. However, they are the best (worldwide) at playing víctima when their intereses and actions are hurt
Crazy world we live in, changes have happened for strange reasons one has to keep an ear to the ground and sleep with your eyes open.
