The Misleading Trend of Round Trip Hiking for Beginners

After the covid era, public interest in outdoor activities has increased significantly. From running, cycling, canyonering, to even more extreme mountain climbing. A lot of people then become impromptu climbers. Actually, there's nothing wrong with that, since exploring nature is fun. After all, there are many mountains in Indonesia that are no more than 2000 metres above sea level. These mountains are, in my personal opinion, highly recommended for beginners.

What makes me speechless is the proliferation of beginner climbers who have the courage to join open trips to rpund trip climb in mountains with an altitude of more than 3000 metres. Is it not allowed? More than whether or not they should, prospective climbers should understand for themselves that reaching 3000 metres with rugged terrain is not trivial. Not to mention understanding the weather, what about physical preparation.

I've been climbing since 2016, and a 3000 metre mountain is not a safe distance for round trip.

THE ROLE OF TRAIL RUNNER INFLUENCERS

Although it's not the fault of the trail runner influencers

They also played a big part in the birth of the contextless ‘ROUND TRIP HIKE’ trend. In Indonesia, there are many trail run events with extraordinary heights, such as the Rinjani cross mountain trail run whose altitude is no doubt.

Back to the prospective climbers, they should be aware that the stamina of beginners with the stamina of trail runners is clearly different. They already have a lot of flying hours with strict training consistency.

Why do I really want to mention this, because since the last two years there has been a lot of news about the fatalities of hikes held by round trip. Starting from climbing members who are hypothermic, there are members who are missing, and even death, all of which are caused by fatigue.

It is true that we cannot read what our fate will be, but at least, we are aware of the dangers. If you are not very experienced, it would be better if you learn a lot and don't hesitate to ask questions.

Also, learn about AMS (altitude sickness) and its emergency treatment, not to mention screening who you will be climbing with. Because this happened not long ago during a SLamet hike in late 2024, a female member was left behind by her group and went missing for about two days. Luckily ... really this I say she was very lucky to be found by the SAR team in a safe condition.

There is a saying, that hike with your friends so that you know who they really are. Although it is not absolutely a guideline, but indeed doing a hike is enough to open up a lot of people's original characters. Are they really caring people, are they ignorant, independent, spoilt, or just irresponsible friends.

From this, I learnt many things, especially about taking my friends hiking. I will take them from the lesser mountains first, such as Papandayan in West Java, or Pandu, Sikunir, Bismo, and Prau, which are all located in the same area, Wonosobo, Central Java.

Hopefully, more and more prospective climbers will be aware of their capacity, most importantly, never be lazy to exercise and train for leg strength and breathing for stamina when climbing mountains. We will not run the mountain in pursuit, our safety is the most important.

Thank you for listening to my concerns.
