Through the night yesterday I couldn't sleep because I had to wake up as early as 4 am to prepare myself for a staff audit held by the Lagos state government, and it's almost that sleeplessness that I can't help but shake my head in annoyance that at this age and time of digital literacy and innovative technology, a state such as Lagos, that deemed itself the digital hub of Africa, can't utilize modern technology for a swift auditing process but instead embrace an obsolete 15th-century style of auditing that discomforts their staff at this time of the year when they ought to be bonding with their family.
You can imagine me waking up and leaving my house as early as 5 am and yet not getting attended to because the men in charge to supervise the process chose to favor those they know or anyone willing to bribe them to get themselves vetted. It's quite disheartening that I and every other diligent staff member of the Lagos State had to undergo such inhuman treatment from those we work for.
And that's not to forget that I still don't understand how you invited 4000-plus staff to come for the audit, and yet you only sent over about 5 people to attend and audit all those multitudes of people. I mean, how does this even make sense? These and several other things were my thoughts these mornings, and when I got to the location of the audit at Adeyemi Bero Hall in Alausa, I didn't know something far more devastating would occur that would literally get me in tears.
After standing for hours due to the unavailability of chairs, not forgetting the power sound system that couldn't project the voice of the coordinator beyond his own lips, and several other poor management flaws that made the exercise annoying, at the end of the day, over 90% of those of us who travelled down from different places still weren't able to get ourselves audited, and on our way back, when everyone looks forward to meeting their family and preparing for the new year, some of my colleagues who boarded the same behind were involved in a ghastly accident that claimed the lives of many and many others with fatal injuries.
Now imagine all In the name of this atrocity called a staff audit, multiple lives of innocent teachers have been lost; everyone behind the idea of this should be arrested and possibly jailed for utilizing such an outdated style in a digital age. Anyway, my condolences to the family of everyone who lost their loved ones because of these shambles called a staff audit.
But then, on a serious note, it's quite disheartening that at this age and era of digital literacy and innovative technology, a so-called self-acclaimed digital hub of Africa, such as Lagos, would put the comforts of her staff on the edge all in the name of a staff audit. I mean, what's the point of the leadership constantly asking us to upload and submit these credentials and taking multiple photocopies if they'll still continuously ask us to travel miles just so you can glance through the same document again?
We need to do better; Lagos needs to do better. You can call yourself the digital hub of Africa and be running a 15th-century style of vetting. I hope Governor Sanwo-Olu and those he put in charge of this exercise are now pleased; after all, they mostly only realize their flaws after there's a need to pay condolences to people who fall victim to their incapability to utilize the right approach.
There's a need to rethink the style, timing, and process of these exercises; festive periods are meant to be spent with family, yet Lagos chose to interfere with this all in the name of an ineffective auditing method. I'm sad and angry and can't help but wonder what the situation would be like in the homes of those whose lives were lost; my condolences to them.
All photos are mine.

Not just Lagos state but the whole of Nigeria needs to do better. It's just so sad that our government are not yet ready to evolve as the world is evolving.
It's so sad that staff that are supposed to audit people are requesting for bride
What's even sadder is the fact that innocent people had to lost their precious lives, and will all this still the government don't care and won't do anything.
May their souls rest in peace 🕊️
It's a disgrace that such is the case in most state in Nigeria, just seems somehow that Lagos is also found in same category given how much they hype themselves.
It's painful it has to get to this before they'll realise their mistakes, but then it's well.
Thanks.
Ah God! This is sad and annoying at the same time. I was reading, and thanking God that there was no stampede, and then I got to the part of the accident and I let out a scream without realizing it! Oh God! What will happen to the families of those teachers now? eh! 😤
This is so sad. Very sad. And, I'm sorry you had to go through that. That's just a reality we have to deal with and it's so sickening.
Omo it's just dishearten going through all of those stress and at the end of the day, I couldn't do what I came for.
It's even more disheartened and painful that all in all the name of them wanting to know if we're alive and in active service, they've taken the life of an innocent man who just like me went there to get the audit over with and be with his family, now he's life has ended while he was trying to prove to his employer that he's alive and in active service...
Where do we go from here, I don't even know how I feel from that moment, cause even I was still in the road when I heard about the incident.
I'm sorry you feel this way. I'm really sorry that I don't have any good word to console you because just like the other ordinary men's death, this too will be swept under the carpet, and the family and friends will bear the brunt of the loss alone. It's so sad.

Hello @vickoly
I read your post and I felt very sad.
Who knows about his family, whether there is anyone else besides him or not, may God give courage to all of them.
You also muster courage.
Thank you.
I think in the coming years there will be a lot more audits and removals of waste that we’ve never seen before among the worlds countries. It’s important that it happens, as painful as it’s going to be.
A crazy tragedy
