The main reason

This week I heard on a podcast I follow a topic that is somewhat relevant to me. The main reasons why a worker leaves a job. In one particular study, the main reason was a lack of growth opportunities.

So let's talk about the six main reasons for an employee to quit in 2024:

  • #6 Lack of Recognition

Recognition is undoubtedly one of the main aspects for employees to consider. Around 71% of the respondents in this study say that they would be much less likely to leave the company if they were recognized more often. A feeling of invisibility and resentment usually arise when there is little recognition from colleagues and managers.

  • #5 Misalignment with company values

At the moment I can say that this is one of my main reasons for discontent. Feeling that the company is sailing in one direction, and that direction or direction. According to the study, around 84% of respondents believe that their company's core values are important for their job satisfaction. I can say that, at the moment, there isn't much satisfaction with what I do in my job, because I feel that the company has only taken the path of giving some of the employees the conditions they need to work.

  • #4 Toxic environment at work

A toxic environment is capable of destroying the morale of anyone or any team. Around 76% of those surveyed reported that it is essential for mental and even physical health that the atmosphere in the workplace is cordial and professional. This point is also present in my workplace. I currently have a colleague who has blocked me on WhatsApp... Can you understand the level of the situation when you literally get canceled? But fortunately it's only with one of my colleagues, so I'm able to get by just fine. This isn't the main reason in my case, but as you can understand, it is one of the reasons why I don't feel much like going to work.

  • #3 Inadequate compensation

This point was the main one for me before I had access to and knowledge of this study. Any worker who feels that their work is not being properly compensated ends up frustrated and dissatisfied, leading them to look elsewhere for what they don't have where they are. Companies should seek to establish points of contact with their employees, with a bi-directional communication channel where concerns are aired and obligations are properly established and evaluated. In the company I currently work for, there is in fact an evaluation plan every two years. We are close to the publication of the evaluations for the previous period. In my previous appraisal there were points where I didn't get the grade I had in mind, and I hope that this next appraisal will be a little closer to reality.

  • #2 Poor work-life balance

Around 41 of the respondents in this study revealed that they had felt a sense of mental or physical burnout in the past year. This feeling leads to periods of psychiatric leave, which in addition to damaging the company itself, ends up minimizing the worker's potential, imposing a burden on them that can necessarily accompany them for a long period of time. The deadlines for completing projects, delivering results and the workload are the main reasons given, but we must not forget one very important point: the fact that the team is not sufficiently strengthened to respond together, meaning that only one or a few members of the team are actually responding to the demands... We all see this situation on a daily basis. At my work, it's notorious for people who are smokers to use their smoking breaks more than is sensible... both in terms of the number and even the length of each break. This leads to an overload of employees who don't take time off to smoke. On this particular point, I ended up adopting a different stance. In the intervening period, I've decided to report any overtime I work beyond my quitting time. I know it's not much financial compensation to receive that extra hour on the payroll, as it's still subject to tax, but it does put the employer on notice that the number of employees isn't enough for the tasks allocated to them.

And the main breaking point is this:

  • #1 Lack of growth opportunities

How many of us know that we have an up-to-date salary, but that it's just not going to be enough when we're deciding whether to stay in a position or look for another alternative. Much of what governs the human condition ends up being the determination to always have a higher, harder-to-reach goal. The simple fact that we are not presented with personal or even team challenges ends up leading to stagnation. The feeling that most marks the search for another job.

If you think about it, a job can't be something you enjoy doing, otherwise it wouldn't be a job. Of course there has to be satisfaction in what we do, but it's about 5 to 10% of all the time we spend. Employment ends up being a form of “slavery” in which we are paid for our most precious asset: our time! And every month we hand over 35 hours of our time so that at the end of the month we get paid... Barter for barter. That's how the pillars of a society are built. But in my particular case, belonging to the middle class, and seeing minimum wages updated annually. I see that there is a phenomenon of “crushing”. Prices go up, but wages don't go up in the same way. Nowadays, it seems that it pays more not to have a higher education, but to be able to do something that doesn't require accreditation, but does require personal skills - jobs that previously didn't pay as much, but which nowadays do because there's hardly anyone willing or able to do them.

I hope you didn't find this post too much of a rant.

Cheers🍀

A job allows you to earn money to live on and sometimes to enjoy yourself. I'm not complaining, my work environment is pleasant, with good coworkers, nice ratio work family... the pay could be better 😄
Have a great weekend

I hope that this period of my professional life is just "one phase"... I believe that if they paid me 50% more, I would be more happy or pleased...
Enjoy the weekend my friend!

Mostly is a combination of all, and for me, it has to be fun, if the fun goes away, it does not make sense any more.

Yes. I'm struggling with all that ATM... Let's see if I can focus again in the positive things on my job. Feeling a little bit off track
