Pony Auction on Market Friday

We grow wild, running in the sun. Cast your shadow and keep company with the shine of the day. There were hundreds of us, making our way down the beach, finding our piece of it, where we can sit and watch as the ponies parade by. Oh, it is not such a grand event, but, it is a tradition of sorts and I have been going and supporting the cause for ten years now. Incidentally, my Henry ( my Chincoteague Pony) was born here on this island, and I bought him at auction, so perhaps that is why it is near and dear to me. Or perhaps, it is just that kind of thing that makes my heart sing. Man and nature working together for a better outcome. I'd like to think that is the one.

Lest I forget, that was last year... and just how I remember the day.

Tradition has it that this is Pony Week on Chincoteague Island on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. This year's swim would have marked the 95th year, but, organizers of the event made a very painful decision to cancel due to Covid-19. See the letter here

Cancelled–Pony Event

The auction will still be held, but the event will be entirely online, but still hosted by the regular Chincoteague Pony auctioneer, Tim. We love Tim and his wife, who helps him out. Happy to see they kept their Chincoteague family together.

The bidding opened yesterday, Thursday, July 23rd, and will be closing Thursday, July 30. To keep as much continuity as possible, they tried to keep the same timeline with the date of the live auction being the final hurrah! Here is a sneak preview of the babies that YOU can bid on anyone.

Rules of the Road

How to Participate:

Go to the market! Any market will do! Food, clothing, plant, or animal, if you wish. You can go to the zoo, an art auction, and restaurants. Anywhere or anything that you pay money for any kind of service.
Take pictures! Be creative! It’s fun!

This shop is at the corner of Pony Swim Lane in Chincoteague. This is the road that leads to the unmarked beach that the ponies swim to, more directed to in my opinion. The owner of this what-not shop has made quite the splash with the pony decor. Yet, I cannot come to the island without snapping a shot of it, it changes, season to season, and as she finds a home for a new piece of decor. Oh, yes. Just part of the charm.

This was the end of the line last year with the Pony Walk. They separate them all, getting them ready for the pony auction. This will be one of the last nights the babies will be with their mamas. Tomorrow will be a whole new life for them.

It is so hard to accessorize your ponies properly. The beauty is not so much in the way they frolic in the tidewaters, but more the loveliness of their locks, many growing long enough to touch the ground.

A pony hoof, Just a faint memory, only to live in the minds of those who witnessed it. A quick tide rolling in washes away all the evidence.

As always, there must be a flower, to color my world.

We really are missing so much this year. However, we dont have much of a choice. I hope next year it can all get back to normal, however, it would not surprise me if Covid is still around somewhat, sadly.

I know this is one of your favorite getaways this covid-19 has put a damper on many things and with 4 million cases in America your better of staying away better to be safe the sorry at least you can still see it on line 👍

It is one of my favorite events in the area during the summer season. It's too bad that cool it has taken it away oh, but I am glad that they are continuing with the auction, even remotely like they are. The island is too small to take any more ponies or horses then it already has. I appreciate that you dropped the link!

This really looks like a amazing event to see all these beautiful horses on this island and been auctioned knowing they are going to a great home like your Henry would love to see this island maybe some day thanks for sharing this amazing island first i have heard about something like this taking place with so many beautiful horses 😊

There's a couple places where they auction off horses, but that's so it doesn't get overpopulated and have no food for them to forage. It's a beautiful sight to go out there and see the ponies in their natural habitat. I love watching them stroll the beach, especially the one they are not allowed on, as it is the one public beach. As usual I love those pics, so nice! And those ponies were so cute, they are hardly seen in the Philippines or maybe I'm the only one 😅 who haven't seen a pony in my entire life.

Glad to know about the tradition maybe its so nice and exciting to participate, hopefully soon I could witness that wonderful event.

Sad to know covid19 prevented the bidding to happen but at least an online bidding helps continue the tradition and at the same will keep you away from getting the virus.

What else I forgot here? Hmm those words you used were perfect for me I wish I know how to construct thoughts that way...

But, thank you. They have certainly gotten shorter at times. Run out of time and there is no stretching it. But, im glad you liked it. I love ponies, they are so cute, adorable but I have no idea about pony auction. It's interesting and I never saw pony auction in person though I have seen cute ponies a lot.

They have a pony auction because they are wild and they live on an island. If they didn't auction of some of the babies, the island would run out of food for them to eat. It's a small line when it it can only support so many. I have been going for the last 10 years no matter where I live oh, it's kind an all week event, where they round up the ponies and then they swim them across to the next Island and then they parade them through the town 2D Fairgrounds where they are arrested for a day. Then they take them one at a time and bid on them. The money is used to support the volunteer fire department, who in turn oh, take care of the ponies. It's a win-win situation.
