Pit stop

in Market Friday5 years ago (edited)

Traveling and tasting local food is the two sides of the same coin, at least it is for me! Although I consider Greek food to be the best among western world and on the top 10 globally, when I am abroad I always try to taste something new as often as I can and Portugal was no exception to that!

Mercado da Baixa at the center of Lisbon is an open-air market with plenty of local goodies. A huge tent is providing shelter for the whole market including a dinning area were you can sit and enjoy your food. You can imagine that it looked like paradise to our small group of four wet and hungry travelers :)

We reserved for ourselves a table and started raiding the numerous stalls! Ham sandwich was the dominant delicacy but we also have found a variety of local cheese, sausages and olives!

The place was packed with tourists so I don't think we made any major discovery but I appreciated the nice flavors on a fair price. I was a bit disappointed by the lack of imagination on the served combinations. But the ingredients was good and as we were four of us we took different stuff and combined it our own way :)

The sangria stall was very popular too and you can enrich your meal with dry fruits and all sort of nuts, even candied ones!

Overall it was a very pleasant pit stop on a day full of walking and sightseeing and if for any reason you feel too tired or too full to walk, there is a line of tuk tuk, the funny looking motorized three wheeler cabs, right out of the market, that can take you anywhere in Lisbon :)

This was a tiny part of my trip to Portugal in 2018 that I had forgotten to edit and share with you and came up in a recent archive digging! I will probably refresh your memory about that trip on Sunday, so it is kind of a teaser too!

This was a magnificent post, filled with delicious memories!!! I forgot about being in fig heaven there, but, never will I forget the amazing sangria. They sold it like we do iced tea! I am sorry it took me so long to respond to your fun post. I love Portugal and even if it was forgotten, it never gets old! Greek food is pretty awesome and I will not deny that. Your pictures are expressive and so well composed. I appreciate everything you have done!
