I Visited The Morning Market To Purchase Tomatoes And Other Produce.

Greetings. It's Thursday and I welcome you to my blog. I hope you had a pleasant day? For me, it was quite productive despite the stress, and I'm thrilled to share it with you.

This time of year, January, tomatoes are usually in surplus here in my town, making them very affordable. In on visiting the market in the first two weeks of January to buy tomatoes, you'll be amazed at the giveaway prices you'll buy tomatoes, lol.

Having known this, I usually take advantage of this price slash to stock up on tomatoes to make tomato paste, which I can use later when the prices go up again.

I had planned on going to the market to purchase some tomatoes so today after clearing my desk, I headed to the popular "Morning Market", where tomato dealers from the north sell their produce. This market is where wholesalers, retailers, and individuals like me buy tomatoes at affordable prices. Not only that, pepper, onion, salad ingredients, vegetables, are sold here. There is also a section for meat sellers and other foodstuffs.

It's located along the popular Ngwa Road near to the Riverside. It's actually a "fresh produce market" and opens as early as 5am, that's how the name came to be. But now you can get every other foodstuff there.

Getting to the market, I was surprised to hear that the price of a basket of tomato is ₦35,000 ($22.67) as against ₦70,000 ($45.34) which is was sold just two weeks ago, during the yuletide. In fact, I was told that yesterday's price was even lower at ₦30,000 ($19.43). On Tuesday it was sold between ₦20,000 - ₦25,000. What a price slash!

Although this this is fresh tomato season, the main factor behind this usual price slash is demand and supply. Supply is higher than demand, hence the low price.

Well I wasn't buying the baskets so I went to where they sell in smaller quantities - buckets and painters.

This 5-liter bucket was sold at ₦7,000 two weeks ago but today it's between ₦3,000 - ₦3,500. I recall buying the half painter, that's one-third of the bucket for ₦2,500 ($1.62) two days before Christmas.

After checking prices and moving around to find the best deals, I bought the a bucket for ₦2,800 ($1.81) and the half painter for ₦1,500 ($0.97). I had to buy this quantity which I can easily process. I'll need to buy more, but that would be by next week, hopefully. Who knows, the prices may drop more. 😅

I also purchased some bell pepper, locally shombo or tatashe, which will be add to the tomatoes while blending. Just like tomatoes, peppers are also cheap now.

This portion is ₦5,000 while a bag is ₦27,000 ($17.49). Pretty cheap.

I checked onion too, but sadly, they're still quite costly.

This bigger basket is ₦75,000 ($48.46).

These ones are ₦7,000 ($4.53) each

While these cost ₦4,500 ($29.15) each. I wonder when the prices will drop.

To round off my purchases, I bought some carrots and green beans. These too are expensive.
Imagine these ones are sold for ₦500 each ($0.62), ₦200 each for the green beans.

Seeing the way the beans were shared, I had to ask the vendor if she counted them because it seemed like they're of same quantity, lol.

They were used to garnish the macaroni I prepared for dinner. 😅
