Today I want to take you to one of the most striking markets in my region, in part it is a great festival and in another an internationally known festival, the national cheese fair. We are in the town of Trujillo located in the province of Cáceres in the West of Spain in the autonomous community of Extremadura. Trujillo has a great history for various reasons over the centuries due to its strategic location, since the Romans took advantage of this enclave and later, in different stages, it became a great reference in medieval times. Illustrated thinkers, writers, artists and important figures such as Francisco Pizarro, an ambitious conqueror in South America, or Francisco de Orellana, who brought news of a great river in the heart of South America, the Amazon, to the old continent. Its multicultural essence is evident in all its streets, buildings and monuments, merging the many years in which the Arabs were in the peninsula as well as at the time of the reconquest. More modern times lead this town to be an important tourist reference point for all those visitors to the region.

Market Friday: For cheese lovers

This entire region of the country is an important livestock area where large herds of sheep and goats predominate, in its meadows there are also pigs and cattle. As it is an ancestral milk-producing area, the cheese-making activity has been parallel to the evolution and passage of the different civilizations, contributing its peculiarity. The varied cheeses, the creams, the cured or semi-cured ones, all are related by the time of year in which they were consumed, being the freshest, the creams, the ones that were finished before. Being able to preserve the cheese was also an important issue and the geographical location of the microclimate helped and helps a lot with this type of curing.

A tour of the different market stalls takes you on a journey through the infinity of flavours, smells, textures and properties of all these good friends. Some submerged in olive oil, others consumed with honey from the area. I also found those cured with pepper from the region, giving them a reddish appearance and a very special flavor. Some lead me to remember cheeses from other regions of Europe such as blue cheese or Mozzarella. The tour is a great opportunity for me to portray and capture some beautiful images that make evident these words that I subscribe to in this publication that is so special to me. As you may have imagined, I took the opportunity to buy some different cheeses, those for fresh consumption and also those that last longer in the pantry, the semi-cured ones.

After this tour of the market, I went to the Muslim Alcazaba that dominates this town. From the top there are incredible views and kilometers where the line of the horizon is lost between the fields and one is thoughtful and hypnotized by this great spectacle. High up and transported to another time, my imagination took me to those moments in history in this area and I was able to imagine some remnants and specific situations of its history.

Para los amantes del queso

Hoy quiero trasladaros a uno de los mercados más llamativos de mi región, en parte es un gran festival y en otra una fiesta conocida internacionalmente, la feria nacional del queso. Nos encontramos en la localidad de Trujillo situada en la provincia de Cáceres al Oeste de España en la comunidad autónoma de Extremadura. Trujillo tiene una gran historia por diversos motivos a lo largo de los siglos por su estratégica ubicación, ya los romanos aprovecharon este enclave y posteriormente en distintas etapas convertirse en una gran referencia de la época medieval. Ilustrados pensadores, escritores, artistas e importantes personajes como Francisco Pizarro ambicioso conquistador en Sudamérica o Francisco de Orellana que trajo al viejo continente la noticia de un gran río en el corazón de América del sur, el Amazonas. Su esencia multicultural es evidente en todas sus calles, edificios y monumentos fusionando los muchos años en que los árabes estuvieron en la península como en la época de la reconquista. Tiempos más modernos llevan a esta localidad a ser un importante punto de referencia turística a todos aquellos visitantes de la región.

Toda esta región del país es una importante zona ganadera donde predominan los grandes rebaños de ovejas y cabras, en sus dehesas también hay porcino y vacuno. Al ser una zona productora de leche ancestral la actividad quesera ha sido pareja a la evolución y al paso de las distintas civilizaciones aportando su peculiaridad. Los quesos variados, las cremas , los curados o semi curados, todos tienen relación por la época del año en que se consumían siendo los más frescos, las cremas , las que antes se terminaban. El poder conservar el queso también era una cuestión importante y la situación geográfica de micro clima ayudaba y ayuda mucho a este tipo de curados.

Un recorrido por los distintos puestos del mercado te lleva a viajar entre la infinidad de sabores, olores, texturas y propiedades de todos estos buenos amigos. Algunos sumergidos en aceite de oliva, otros consumidos con la miel de la zona. Encontré también los curados con pimento de la región dándoles un aspecto rojizo y un sabor muy especial. Algunos me llevan a recordar quesos de otras regiones de Europa como el queso azul o la Mozzarella. El recorrido se me hace una gran oportunidad para retratar y capturar algunas bellas imágenes que dejan en evidencia estas palabras que suscribo en esta publicación tan especial para mí. Como os habéis imaginado he aprovechado para comprar algunos quesos diferentes, los de consumo en fresco y también los que me duren más tiempo en la despensa, los semi y curados.

Después de este recorrido por el mercado me fui a la Alcazaba musulmana que domina esta localidad. Desde lo más alto hay unas vistas increíbles y kilométricas donde la línea del horizonte se pierde entre los campos y uno queda pensativo e hipnotizado por este espectáculo grandioso. En lo alto y trasladado a otro tiempo mi imaginación me llevo a esos momentos de la historia en esta zona y me pude imaginar algunos retales y situaciones concretas de su historia.

Wow, those cheeses look amazing! I too live with a constant reminder of the Roman Empire, I'm right next to Hadrian's Wall in the North-East of England. We have many ancient settlements and army forts along it's length.
