Hello friends who love science, I bring you a very interesting post. We will be able to see the movement of a protozoan which catches our attention because it manages to move through the water at a speed of 1mm/s which is quite fast for a microscopic organism. The object of research is a: (Vorticellidae) which has two different swimming forms, with a magnification greater than 100x we will be able to appreciate its internal structure. I hope you enjoy this experiment.🧑🏻‍🎓🤓

What is a Vorticella 🔬🤓/Que es un Vorticella🧪

These organisms are protozoa (unicellular protist organisms) which in turn are grouped within the family of (Ciliophora) within this family are grouped microorganisms that present in their morphology extension of the wall called cilia, cilia are used for different functions from feeding to movement such is the case of our Vorticella. Luckily for us, handling Vorticellas is safe since they do not cause any disease to humans, they are used as an indicator of water quality, they are freshwater and frequent (eutrophic) waters, that is, bodies of water with direct sunlight and many dissolved nutrients.🧑🏻‍🎓🧪

As the name indicates its body is shaped like a vesicle or rounded, they are attached to the substrate by the peduncle which we see in the photograph, the Vorticella have the appearance of a microscopic flower where the peduncle is the "stem"; Its most sophisticated structure is its mouth apparatus which is complemented by hundreds of cilia which it uses to create a whirlwind in the water and thus attract bacteria from which it feeds, the cilia also help it move in the aquatic environment according to records it is so fast that it can move a millimeter every second! We also highlight that when it is in motion the peduncle contracts towards the body! We see the typical organelles of a protozoan a vacuole and other structures including the ectodermi and endodermi.⚗️🧬

Movement with cilia (living organism)🔬🤓/Movimiento con los cilios (organismo vivo)🧪

Seeing Vorticella in person is a bit of a tedious task, but not impossible! The idea of this experiment is to be able to see a little of their behavior in the water. In this first video I filmed a little of how they move thanks to their cilia. To do this, we have to look very closely at the front part where the mouthparts are. You can see some moving "lines" in detail. Identifying them is not easy and we need a good microscope! We could say that they have a "free lifestyle".🤓🔬🧪

Vorticella feeding🔬🤓/Vorticella alimentandose🧪

Here we see the famous retractile movement of the protozoan, all thanks to the cilia and the peduncle! This action is a form of response when it feels threatened, at the same time if we observe the mouth apparatus it is in movement what it does is filter water to attract bacteria that will then be digested, the Vorticella are of various shapes and sizes, this one could be between 80 to 150 microns! I can not identify the species because I need more details, I would have to do an increase of at least 500x to 1000x.🔬🧑🏻‍🎓
