My Experience With People and Social Media In an Accident Scene

in StemSocial17 days ago

I was disgusted a few days ago by the attitude of people and I do not think I have ever lost my cool like that before. Social media has become more of a curse to us than a blessing especially with people willing to either get paid, trend, or just want to share things so people can say they did share.

We need to understand how social media works or maybe the right word to use is how to use it responsibly. We need to understand where, when, how, and at what point to go on social media because doing it at the wrong time could be costly. Let me share my reason for saying this.

I was traveling on Saturday to Ibadan and decided to go by bus. I wanted to go with a car but my friend who was going to dry me started to run temperature so I quickly told him to go to the hospital while I take public transport to where I was going. I was not really cool with the public transport because I will have to wait for a long time before the bus gets filled and then it will start to move slowly even when I intended to get to where I was going to very fast.

The journey began and we had not gone far when we saw a bus accident. The bus had tumbled and there was a woman under the bus and some people inside the bus so it was certain that the weight of the bus and the people in it was on the woman. There were a lot of people who had cuts and injuries around their head and body but since they were fine, I believe the most critical of them was the woman underneath the bus.

I asked people to help push in other to lift the bus so I could access the woman under the bus. When I pulled her out, people said she was dead and that was because her tongue was already pushed out and she had bled from nose and mouth. I decided to check her pulse and it was very faint so I knew there was hope. I called for people to help with water by the side but not pour it on her, I tried to open her mouth a little so the tongue to release and allow air go through the nostrils.

I asked if there was any doctor or nurse amongst the passengers in the 3 buses that parked but there was non. It was just me who was willing to do something, others were just shouting and taking videos. I was so pissed at the fact that there was a life to safe and the next thing people could think off was social media videos so they could post it. I performed CPR and when she started breathing, I sprinkled drops of water on her head not because it was necessary but because people kept on saying that I should pour water and I wanted to let the people who were shouting I pour water to keep quiet.

Although, the feel of water on the face triggers the gasp reflex. I kept on begging people to call an ambulance or call the Federal Road Safety Corp so they can know there is an emergency but people were not interested in that, they were busy on their phone to take videos and pictures and were posting on their social media.

I was very pissed that I yelled at them and immediately people took away their phone. I yelled at them because out of about 50 people who where in an accident scene, no one could be reasonable enough to call for help, they were busy using their phones for social media purpose. When did we lost empathy in our world, when did we become a people who do not care about human life again but are more interested in social media. Sincerely we need to start seeing humans as humans and not commodities or things of contents.
