Dermatophytoses :- Self Medication, A Wrong Step To Treatment

in StemSocial2 days ago

I went to the farm just like other days and I was excited by the sight of the planted crops. I wanted to take a tour around it, and spend a few days in the farm since there were still works to do. I had a great experience overall at the farm although the water I was going to bath with wasn't clean as I would expect it to be. I used antiseptic soap and I was fine or so I thought.

I spent 4 days at the farm and I had to bath with the same water, also I didn't like where I spent my nights, I just felt they could do better but I was in a remote area so I had to just make do with what I had available. I was done with the work in the farm and I returned home to my daily life but then I stated to notice patches on my skin starting with my neck. I didn't take it too serious. I felt it was just a reaction to the water and the environment I had just come from but the patches wasn't willing to go anytime soon.

Two weeks had past and I just let it be with the intention that it was going to disappear by itself when my immune system was done dealing with it. I trust my immune system, they are good at fighting small villains like this so why should I worry. I continued with my daily activities when I noticed that it had appeared on my hands. I saw patches on my hands but I didn't give it a serious meaning so I just overlooked it.

It became clear to me that I needed to do something when I went to the salon and I decided to check the mirror only to see that I was having two colors of skin already. The saying "A silent mouth is a silent future" didn't work in my case because everyone I showed this immediately got a degree as a practicing doctor even people who didn't see the four walls of a classroom.

There were a lot of advises from rubbing Petroleum Motor Spirit, to Using Battery Water from Car battery (like who uses car battery on their skin). I remember a woman telling me it is a result of heat when I actually do not stay in heated place. One thing I have learned to do is to listen to advise and pick which is best for me especially medical advises.

It became a thing of worry for me and I just wanted it gone. I wish I could peel off the epidermis and allow it grow back. It was visible that anywhere I went, people saw it immediately and they going to give advises that either sounded irrelevant to the situation at hand or was just not worth given a try. Someone asked me to get antibiotics and use them, I was forced to ask what type of antibiotics do I get for a dermal problem I do not even know if it was as a result of a bacteria or not. Moreover, most dermal problems are fungal problems so I just listened to the advise without using it.

The Monday which was the week to Christmas, I just went to the hospital to see a doctor. I was tired of listening to advises from people whom I solicited advice from and those who gave unsolicited advise. When I went to the doctor, he asked about any recent change in environment or association with something dirty which I was not use to before. I didn't waste time to tell him I had just came back from the farm some 3 weeks ago. He laughed and said "Dermatophytoses" and left to write a prescription for me. He didn't say more or less rather, he handed me the prescription sheet and told I left his office to the pharmacist where I purchased Griseofulvin.

I used the medication and in less than 5 days, my skin color was back to normal. Upon search, I realized dermatophytoses is a fungal infection of the skin, hair, and nails caused by dermatophytes of which Ringworm is one of them. The entire experience of mine shows how people self medicate or treat themselves with things that are not even supposed to be used on their body.

Majority of the things prescribed by the people for self-treatment were things that were harsh for the skin. For instance rubbing PMS (gasoline) on the skin, or using Battery Water (sulfuric acid and water) would have caused burns on my skin. Also using antibiotics for a fungal infection would have just been a waste of time as well as leading to antibiotic resistance which is terrible. I would advise that a person never self-medicate as it can be dangerous. Seeing the doctor does a lot of wonders than you can think compared to ingesting different types of things or applying harmful substance to the body.
