Understanding How Blood Transfusion Works and What It Means for You

In everyday use, we must have come across the word blood transfusion. A blood transfusion is the process by which one type of blood is exchanged for another type of blood, usually your own. A blood transfusion is also sometimes referred to as a blood transfusion, or a blood draw. Well some people refer to it as blood donation though I didn't agree with that though.

A blood transfusion is a procedure in which an individual's own blood is replaced by a more suitable version, usually a type obtained through a blood donation. A blood transfusion is a complex process, involving removing a person's own blood, mixing it with a suitable donor's blood, and reinfusing the resulting mix back into the person. Medically the procedure need to be handled with so much care and professionalism as without this, it can leads to the death of both parties involved in the blood transfusion.

The composition of blood is dependent on the individual; each has a different number of blood cells (plasma cells, RBCs), and a different set of proteins. The level of hemoglobin, for example, is higher in some people than in others, and that determines how fast the body can process food, what it can store, and how quickly a recipient's body can repair damaged cells. This also goes a long way in determining the blood group of each individual at the end of the day

The amount of red blood cells (RBCs) in a person's blood also affects how quickly the body can heal. There is a balance between the new cells created in the body and the old cells that are discarded. The ratio of RBCs to plasma cells is also influenced by the individual. How a person's body reacts to a given transfusion also affects the person's health and well-being.

I will like us to discuss briefly about the types of blood we have. Well to many of us, we are quite familiar with them as it is what we have been hearing growing up.

There are four main types of blood: red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), platelets, and plasma. All blood types are represented, but the proportions of each type are different in each person. For example, someone with the O blood type has about 50% RBCs and 50% WBCs; someone with the A type has about 76% RBCs and 24% WBCs; and someone with the O+ type has about 97% RBCs and 3% WBCs.

The type of blood that is used in a given transfusion is based on the individual's blood type, and the amount needed is based on the patient's condition. For example, if a patient has a blood type that is Type O and they are experiencing anemia, a blood transfusion with type O blood will correct theemia, but if the same patient is also experiencing infection and a high fever, the type O blood can lead to worse health outcomes.

Do you know that the main reason for a blood transfusion is to treat anemia, a condition in which the body does not have enough red blood cells (RBCs) to carry out normal functions. An example of the use of a blood transfusion in anemia is a blood product that is given to people on dialysis to help them get enough red blood cells.

Another reason for a blood transfusion is to save the life of a patient. A blood transfusion can be lifesaving, as in the case of a person with a life-threatening illness. There are also potential benefits to be gained by using a blood transfusion as a preventative measure.

Given the complexity of the process of a blood transfusion like I have discussed earlier, it's easy to forget about potential side effects. Fortunately, side effects of a blood transfusion are relatively rare and manageable.

Some side effects that occur very rarely and can be treated easily are:

  • Bleeding

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Skin reactions

  • Immune reconstitution

  • ESRD (end-stage renal disease)

Blood transfusions are a common procedure that can be life-changing. While they may seem like a straightforward procedure at first, you should know exactly how a blood transfusion works and what to expect from each transfusion. Most of all, you should understand the potential side effects of a blood transfusion so you can identify them early on and avoid them.

Blood is important component in our body system. Lack of blood would definitely lead anaemia a condition when the person has short of blood. Few people survive when the severely short of blood due less donation of blood to blood band in Ghana. Most people are reluctant to donate lately.
