Hello, welcome. Black Swan Events—are leading events that has the potential to change history, in other words, an event that imprints the world powerfully and durably. The term itself is indicative: these are infrequent and unpredictable events that catch us totally off guard and change everything. So, let's go through a few essential historic Black Swan events, along with their rippling consequences. Ride with me into history!

We start in the 14th century, the event of the Black Death that swept through Europe, killing millions. Nobody saw it coming, and it changed the course of history. Feudalism began to be undermined; significant losses in population brought social and economic shifts that carried the way to modernity.

Fast forward to the 20th century, you find the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941—an event that unceremoniously threw the United States into World War II and shaped the course of the conflict that would reorder the world. At that time, most Americans did not care to get involved in the war. All changed after that premeditated attack. The attack united the nation and changed the course of the war.

Speaking of wars, one cannot help but remember that in 1989, the Berlin Wall tumbled down—the great Cold War wall between East and West Germany. Everyone thought it would be there forever, but one fine morning, it came tumbling down almost overnight; this signaled the end of the Cold War and heralded a new chapter in Europe.

More recently, we had the 2008 financial crisis with the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the global economy spiraling out of control. Very few people foresaw how big and ugly it would be, but even now, it's still resounding. Most probably, regulations and practices about finance have changed since that time, but the entire crisis illustrated exactly how fragile and interdependent our systems are.

Now, from a much bigger perspective, let's take a look at the modern Black Swan event that has indeed affected every one of us: the COVID-19 pandemic. Wildly few could imagine how a new virus could paralyze the world as we got to late 2019. There was much disruption in global economies, and healthcare systems were overstretched, changing so many things in our daily lives. This exposed us how all systems put in place are vulnerable and forced a rethinking of how we are to live and work.

These events have established right beneath our noses the coming into being of Black Swans and proved how things can turn around. But what are the lessons from it? First, this underlines adaptability: when the unexpected happens, those who can pivot often fare well. The other lesson is the value of preparedness. While we can't predict every Black Swan, we can build resilience into our systems.

Think how much better countries' plans for pandemic preparedness are now compared with a few years ago.

And there is the lesson about questioning assumptions. Almost everybody believed that house prices would never fall until the financial crisis. That assumption was catastrophically wrong. In many other ways, such events have shown us how the world is, more than ever, interconnected: a crisis in one part of the globe very quickly impacts the rest. Recognizing these linkages might assist us in becoming better able to anticipate and avoid the effects of future Black Swans.

So, what does this mean for the future? In a world growing into an increasingly complex and connected society, any possibility of an event such as a Black Swan has been acknowledged. But if humankind has learned from the past more, adapted to the present more diversely, and been more adaptable in preparation for the unexpected, then most likely, we can handle anything that comes our way.

And so this concludes our Black Swan deep dive today. It reminded me that one is just around the corner, but with the right attitude and preparation, we can face it head-on. So, until next time, be ready for anything.
