The city of Igboora, in Nigeria is the Twin City of the World. There are twins from door to door. But most of them are fraternal.
Many people desire twins, triplets, or even quadruplets, especially after experiencing fertility challenges. The advent of new ways to attack infertility via Invitro fertilization, and artificial insemination or sorogacy gives so many chances to improve chances of having multiple pregnancies like twins ajs triplets.
However, not everyone understands the complexities that come with multiple pregnancies until they're in that situation.
Now lets talk about the types
Twin pregnancies occur in two main ways:
Dizygotic (Fraternal) Twins: Formed when two separate eggs are fertilized by two different sperm. These twin can be of different sexes or the same sex, but they are not identical and they have separate amniotic sacs and placentas
Monozygotic (Identical) Twins: Formed when a single fertilized egg splits early in development. These twins are genetically identical ,are always the same sex and may or may not share the same amniotic sac (depending on when the split occurs). They always share one placenta

Risks for the Mother
Multiple pregnancies increase health risks, including:
- Preterm labor: The uterus becomes overstretched, leading to early contractions and potential premature birth.
- Preeclampsia: High blood pressure and protein in urine, signaling placental issues that can escalate to seizures (eclampsia).
- Gestational diabetes: Poor blood sugar control due to hormonal changes.
- Anemia: Increased blood supply demands for the babies can deplete the mother's iron stores.
- Postpartum hemorrhage: Higher risk of excessive bleeding after delivery.
Risks for the Babies
Complications for twins include:
- Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS): Uneven blood flow between shared-placenta twins, potentially starving one twin while overloading the other.
- Growth restriction: One twin may grow significantly slower than the other due to so many reasons.
- Congenital anomalies: They are at higher risk of birth defects, sometimes due to cord compression or entanglement.
Finally it is important to note that while its a beau to have twin, watch out for any of these symptom.
While twins are often desired, they come with serious medical considerations. Proper prenatal care and monitoring are crucial to manage these risks.
