What if we could harness the energy of the Earth's rotation? Our planet rotates, that's why we have days and it is a gigantic energy because it is making an entire planet rotate. It turns out that there is a researcher at Princeton University, C. F. Chyba, who has created a device that generates electricity from the rotation of our planet. What this device does is interact with the Earth's magnetic field.
The prototype is shown, it is small, with which they tried to do this operation of extracting energy from the Earth's rotation and it has already been controversial from the start, support has poured in or rather there have been scientists, especially in France, who are very interested in this topic, they are curious to reproduce this experiment, but on a larger scale.
This device is based on something quite simple, it is based on a hollow magnetic cylinder that was built to generate electricity using the Earth's magnetic field, the cylinder does not move at least in the laboratory, what the cylinder does is like all of us rotate with the planet, but when rotating with the planet both us and the cylinder are being dragged through the Earth's magnetic change, it sounds a bit amazing, almost like a perpetual motion machine.
This story of extracting energy from the movement of the Earth sounds like a perpetual motion machine, but in this case the energy does not come out of nowhere as in that myth of the perpetual motion machine, but rather it would be captured from the rotational energy of the planet, the researcher and his team had managed to generate 18 micro volts through this cylinder with this prototype, it is little, but keep in mind that this cylinder is only 30 cm.
The researcher Chyba found inspiration by studying a curious phenomenon and it is the possible heating mechanism in the moons that move through the magnetic field of a planet, specifically Jupiter, Jupiter is the one with the most powerful magnetic field in the solar system, it is enormous and very intense and some of its moons pass through it, Io, Europa for example, in fact Europa receives so much radiation from Jupiter that a human on the surface of Europa, even with his space suit, would end up receiving so much radiation in one or two days. which would be deadly for him, so exploring Europe is going to be quite complicated for humans.
This researcher wondered if this effect that occurred on those moons could have a similar effect on objects on the Earth's surface. In reality, this is easy to understand. Imagine that you are holding a metallic object, for example a sword. The electrons in the metal of that sword move just like you do at the speed of the Earth's rotation. Equator or at zero meters per second if you were at the North Pole, which would not work.
If you were in Princeton where they did this experiment at 350 meters per second and according to these researchers with this procedure, what they calculated is that the sword would originate from that metallic object that you have in your hand, it would originate about 10 m Newton per coulomb, it is little, it is some energy that happens, and in our normal world those electrons end up reorganizing quickly on the surface of the metal and create an electric field of the same amount of 10 mVolts per meter, just enough to cancel the effect of the magnetic force, that is, in the end it is generated but it is neutralized.
C. F. Chyba discovered that there is a gap and that in our normal world there are also abnormal situations, situations in which the electrons cannot organize themselves in a pattern that ends up canceling that magnetic force and a situation without cancellation, an abnormal situation, occurs curiously in a hollow cylinder of zinc manganese ferrite, apparently this material is both a magnetic shield and a weak conductor, that is, it has the best of both worlds, two essential properties in this case to allow it to accumulate. a small voltage in the cylinder.
Of course, when it is positioned correctly in the Earth's magnetic field, it must be placed at the exact angle and this was the idea that C. F. Chyba and Kevin Hand, who is another of their collaborators, applied or proposed in 2016 to NASA, specifically to the California Jet Propulsion Laboratory and they were literally kicked out, they were kicked out and received a lot of criticism.
The researchers ended up designing this prototype and in the end they did the experiment, it is 30 cm long and only 2 cm wide, it is a small tube. They oriented it at the correct angle from north to south at an angle of 57 degrees with respect to the ground. This has to be measured very precisely depending on where you are located with respect to the planet and in that position in the end they managed to generate a very small voltage of 18 micro volts that seemed to correspond to what they had calculated but it is still not clear. issue, because they are studying whether it is possible that the experiment could have received that small amount of energy due to other factors.
The researchers promise to continue forward and have received the attention of other researchers, specifically French, who want to retest the experiment and, if possible, on a larger scale, make a tube of at least 2 or 3 meters, which would be the most logical thing to capture more energy and be able to rule out possible things that may have generated that small voltage.
