Imagine a world where the Earth's magnetic field collapses, auroras begin to shine in the sky across the planet and thunderstorms emerge from nowhere, according to a study that is already a few years old and was updated now in 2025. This occurred 42,000 years ago and as proof, scientists studied a perfectly preserved tree fossil that according to them revealed incredible clues about this chaotic event.
What happens when the magnetic field disappears; This force is what protects our planet against solar and cosmic radiation, when the radiation weakens it reaches the surface, altering the climate and life on Earth and according to scientists the last complete geomagnetic reversal occurred 780,000 years ago, but there are minor events called geomagnetic excursions that also cause drastic changes.
The most recent of these was the Laschamp excursion which occurred 42,000 years ago and lasted about 800 years before the magnetic field stabilized. In 2021, New Zealand scientists found a 42,000-year-old fossilized kauri tree that preserved environmental data from that period. Using radiocarbon measurements, researchers were able to reconstruct a detailed timeline of atmospheric changes.
When the magnetic field collapsed the ozone layer deteriorated, exposing the planet to high levels of UV radiation, with this the auroras spread throughout the planet accompanied by electrical storms and severe climate changes. Researchers suggest that the first humans sought refuge in caves, which would explain the increase in rock art in that period.
Currently the North Magnetic Pole is moving rapidly and the magnetic field is weakening and scientists believe that this could be a sign of a new geomagnetic inversion in the future, if a similar event occurred today the electrical networks, satellites and communication systems could collapse causing a global technological blackout and to finish thinking about the Adams event and what really influenced human evolution and climate changes, we are walking towards a new transformation on the planet.
